Tax freedom day - 5 long months

Today we have Tax freedom day in British Columbia, Canada. :drink:
It is 3 days later than last year. Amazing how much we pay in taxes up here. :confused2: No wonder most people don't seem to have much spending money after working for more than 5 months to give to the government. What is your tax freedom day?
I would suspect it is different by province or state as the tax rate for income tax and sales tax would vary.

we do one weekend where we don't pay any state sales tax (4%) but we still pay parish/county tax (4.5%)

In Texas, it's always just before school starts in the Fall or late Summer, so people can buy clothes and school supplies. This year will be August 20, 21, and 22. And it doesn't include everything by any means, but if you'd like to see a list of what is and isn't taxed at that time, you can read all about it at the Sales Tax Holiday.

Just to clarify. What I mean by tax freedom day is the day we have finished paying the government all the direct and indirect taxes for the year. I believe it works out to 41% of your income for the average person.

Oops, I misunderstood. And now that I know what you mean, I don't know when ours is.

Yeah, work 41% of the year to pay for someone else's spending.

Currently it is May 30 here (up from May 27 last year).

However it is expected sales tax will rise from 17.5% to perhaps 20% in the emergency budget due in a fortnight which along with a few other changes may put it back well into June next year.

Here is a list of when tax freedom day is reach in each USA state.
Tax Freedom Day]The Tax Foundation - Tax Freedom Day by State, 2010.
State residents that think they do not pay any taxes still have to pay into the state coffers someway.

Obviously, I don't think we never have to pay any taxes. I thought he meant that one or more days a year when a state will allow no sales tax as an incentive to consumers.

According to that chart, my state's Tax Freedom Day is April 6th.

Also, according to that site our nation's taxes make up for 26.89% of income for this year.

This always strikes me as odd logic. The government services we consume don't stop in April. Highways keep highwaying...Gramps keeps getting his SS and Medicare, the kids keep going to school, the military keeps fighting... crime don't take the rest of the year off. :D

The folks at the tax foundation should spend more time articulating where the money goes, otherwise they're just another something for nothing crowd.

And another thing....:D..how much of my federal tax dollars go to places like Alaska and Alabama?

Of course tax is paid all year long, on purchases, income tax deducted off your pay check or other income. What tax freedom day means is that on June 5th the average person in British Columbia has paid the equivalent amount of all the different yearly taxes to that point. Now the rest of the year the money is theirs to spend. They are trying to show just how much tax we pay, it takes over 5 months  of a person's yearly income to pay it.

Mousefield,

The tax foundation's framing of taxation doesn't escape me.

I'd like these organizations to put some meat in the sandwiches they sell. Where do they think the money goes and what should we stop paying for.

If they had that message they'd be more than just hot air.
