I have a home made 3 point log splitter that used to belong to my brother in law. BIG, heavy and made out of an i beam. Also, probobly too much flow required for use with my little Deere 2320 tractor.

I have a 6.5 horse gas motor sitting around, and want to convert the splitter to a self contained, trailer mounted unit. Have been looking at gas powered splitter specs, and here is what I have so far;

This looks to be a 4" cylinder with about 18 inches of travel. As I said, have a 6.5 hp motor to go on it. Plan to get a 11gpm 2 stage pump.

How big of a hydraulic tank should I have for this setup? I have seen some splitters advertised with a 1.5 gallon tank?!?! I would thing you would want more than that for cooling.... I have a 7 gallon hydraulic tank, but would that be overkill for this setup?

Thanks for the help...

Your 7 gal tank would work quite well.

Some say 1 gal of fluid for each gal of pump flow

7 gal would be good, you can't go too big but you can go too small.
I've got a 13hp driving an 11gpm pump with a 8 gal tank. It starts to get warm after a couple hours running. Rememebr if you do build your own to make sure to have the return at one end and the suction at the other
