In general, the SAE warned about airbag fatalities a very long time ago.

Latest developments below.

Car companies knew Takata airbags were dangerous, suit alleges - Business - CBC News

According to the article, Auto manufacturers were complicit in this and they received the majority of the settlement.

If I knew that I could be paid well for being negligent, I would have conducted my technical career differently....

I wonder how much money they saved by making the little piece of metal too thin. Maybe 5 cents each?

Esp. in high-volume manufacturing, Accounting usually overrules Engineering. Makes it "challenging" to stay working in engineering.

Knowing what we have learned about this saga, and that your vehicle was one in the recall, would you get them deactivated? I wouldn't, since the life-saving capacities are great and the shrapnel is hit-or-miss. A buddy of mine had his disconnected as it made him feel less safe. You all?

This has been going on for years. What changed to make them all of a sudden agree to pay?

I received a recall notice from Toyota for the bags back in June.
The notice warns against using the passenger seat.
Still WAITING for the dealer to notify me that the bags are available.
Have inquired twice!

Only guessing.... normal corp legal tactic..... delay, delay, then just before the outcome becomes inevitable, settle.

I'd expect it is well known, but worth repeating.... as far back as the late 60's, the SAE was warning about fatalities with short drivers, even with properly functioning airbag systems.

Esp. w/o a variable deployment system (if they exist ?) if I was short of arm, I'd get the driver's airbag disabled.

Yes. Modern vehicles are safe enough (IMO) w/o airbags, that I'd have a suspected defective one deactivated until replaced.

That raises an interesting legal issue. Before the repair is done, if someone is injured sitting in the passenger seat, is the notice-informed owner of the car then liable ?

That is certainly a concern of mine..
To date, I am with with "jimmysisson". I have NOT had the passenger airbag deactivated.
I have filed a complaint about this situation, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Probably won't be any action, but I wanted there to be a record.
