Plowing snow today the tach stopped working. Does anyone know if this is an electrical or mechanical type? If it is an electrical type where would the sending unit be at and how would you go about checking the gauge out. All I can find as far as parts go is just the instrument panel as one. Can anyone help me out.

The tach input is from your alternator. A pink wire in the altenator harness is the signal output going to the tach. My tach sticks sometimes on my tractor and I have to tap the face of the instrument panel to get it going again. But it has never failed once it is working.

The instrument panel has a fuel gage, the tach, and a temperature gage that are all individually replaceable. You have to take the instrument panel module out of the tractor and disassemble it. There are two tests listed in the repair manual and both are resistance checks with an ohmeter on the removed tach. I can give you those tests if you want to do this yourself, but your dealer should also be able to check this for you if you don't feel confident.

Do your headlights work? Fuse #4 is the headlight and instrument panel fuse. I would remove the instrument panel and check fuse #4 under the panel. I would then remove and reconnect the connector to the inst. panel and check the connection of the the pink wire on the alternator. Put everything back together and check one last time before taking anything apart in case it was a bad connection.

Let me know if you need more assistance in removing the tach. I think I have a thread here with some pictures that might help. I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: Here's the link with some photos. Even though I am replacing the temperature gage, the tach is right beside it and comes out in a similar fashion.

BTW: Rich, welcome to TBN and the New Holland forum.:)

Thank you for the reply. left it in the garage over night and started it up next day and the tach was working. When it warms up a little I will check it as you suggest with the connections first. It might be the connections as when we bought the tractor I had a blown fuse and when I pulled the gauges off the whole area behind was full of a mouse nest and had to use a shop vac to remove it so this might be connected. We just got the tractor the day after thanksgiving. We went from a Ford 1210 (since new 1984) to this TC45DA (used). Not use to the heavy weight yet in soft yard compared to the 1210.

Just before I stored the T2310 for the Winter it had a sporadic tach problem. Once I get it back going in the Spring I'm also going to check connections.

No doubt about a tractor this heavy leaving marks on the lawn!

This post jogs my mind - I now realize I have seen some normal condensation inside the cover of the inst. panel when out blowing the show. Could be that you had a wee bit of condensation "hold" the needle in place in the form of ice. Garage parking melted it - poof - back in business.
Or - it could be the wife is out tonight and I'm trying too hard to contribute to an online conversation :D
