Anybody got one? PT lists it for $600 on their web site for the PT180. Do you think I could adapt it to my 4.0GPM New Holland TC18?

Does it oscillate side to side? or do you need to reposition the tractor?

I'm sick of digging / axing / wrecking my (old) chainsaw trying to remove stumps. Rental place wants $250 per day to rent a grinder. Local tree man wants $50 per stump.

Disclaimer: Of course pending CFO's approval - does it even need to be said /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I'm pretty sure it does not oscillate. My understanding is to move the cutter from side-to-side, the PTer's will take advantage of the articulated steering. Simply turning the steering wheel back and forth will yield the desired result.

Of course, an actual PT owner will likely respond and give you an accurate answer. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I don't have a stump grinder. However, Bmac's right. It is attached to the loader arms with a quick attach plate. You can control depth and forward backward tilt with the joystick, forward and backwards with the foot pedals(drive forward or backwards) and side to side with the steering wheel. Also, the PT is rated at 8GPM. I don't know if the stump grinder uses that full 8GPM, but my guess is it does.

The T3381 is probably the same grinder (18 inch wheel) that is used on the PT 422 an 425 and which I adapted to use on my struck Magnatrac. My Magnatrac has a hyd PTO flow of about 8-10 gpm same as the PT 425, so it was a no brainer for me. You can read more about my adapation at the following link:

Modified Stump Grinder

The grinder would probably work with 1/2 the hyd flow. But, it would spin at about 1/2 the normal speed which would translate to 1/2 the velocity of the cutting teeth and consequently less cutting power. I can throttle the hyd output on my Magnatrac, so I could (next time I put it on) try spinning the grinder at a lower speed and see how much of a difference in cutting ability there really is. You could call the folks at PT about this and see what their opinion is.

I have found that it takes a good amount of maneuvering of the cutter to get a stump fully ground down. If you mount on the loader of your NH, moving the grinder side to side may be more of a pain than the whole thing is worth. You may have to design some sort of hydraulic cylinder on the bracket to angle it side to side.

Hazmat:

Just a thought here, but the biggest issue you would have (as folks have already identified) is that you can't swing the stump grinder from side to side (which you can easily do with a PT). (Yes, I have one, btw.) However, here's a thought:

Instead of mounting it so that it's axis of spin is parallel to the bucket's width, mount it so that it's axis of spin is perpendicular to the bucket's width. In other words, instead of mounting it so that the chips spew out the back, turn it 90 degrees so that the chips spew out to one side. (I'd make it so that you can mount it either direction...don't want to sling chips, rocks, etc. toward a window or vehicle!) That way, you could use the bucket curl and/or tractor movement to swing it back and forth. You might want to consider mounting it at a 45 degree angle so you have even more control, or just mount it to some sort of turntable that allows you to rotate it to and lock it into multiple positions as needed.

You'd lose the ability to tilt the grinder this way, but I'm not sure you really need it...raising/lowering and being able to swing it back and forth is enough I believe.

Will it run off 4pm? I don't know that one...I'm sure it will, but I don't know how effective it will be at a lower speed. You might want to call PT and see what they say. You could add a PTO pump to run it. You might want to search and see if there are any 3PH stump grinders also. One final thought is that you could possibly build one from one of PT's stump cutter blades...

Dave
