I have some questions about using synthetic oil in my new Kioti. I would like to start using this when I change my oil/filter at 50 hours, currently at 21 hours. I would like the tractor to last and I know I will be using when it is pretty cold for snow removal. I have never used this type of oil in any motor. How critical is it to get out all of the old dino oil before going to synthetic? All I have ever seen around here is the Mobil 1. Is there a significant difference in quality between the different brands? What other brands are there besides Mobil 1 and Amsoil?

Hi GregMTV, just go here http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/
for links and all the information you'd ever want to get on oil. I feel that by doing so, you can make the most informed decision possible on your question. There are very strong opinions on the "dino" oil vs synthetic oil. I think it best for you to read all the information you can, and then make your own decision based upon facts rather than anyone's opinion.

A good "for example" is my grandfather. He will not consider synthetic oil. He was a farmer and a railroad engineer. He says that regular oil has been good enough for over a century, so it obviously works. He is 98 years old and I agree with him that most anything he buys and properly maintains now will likely out last him. There again, he has been saying that for 20 years now! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Myself, I obviously believed the same thing until my line of work forced me to review the material facts. Oops! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif There I went and inserted my opinion. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Read the true facts from lab tests on the actual product as well as oil analysis results that have been sent in to labs after use. There are group III, IV, and V oil products for internal combustion engines easily available to you. As long as what you buy meets the minimum standards, such as an API rated oil, listed by your manufacturer and you follow their maintenance schedule while under warranty, all of the oil brands will work for you. It's your money and your choice what you use from there. My only suggestion is that you base your decision on logic and fact, not opinion. Good luck!

First off why wait? Switch now since it will hurt nothing.

Lastly, as Dargo has stated there are different groups of oils ranging from groups 1 to 5. The 3 and up are the good ones being 4 and 5 the best. As I have stated time and time again, you get what you pay for. Yes there is difference in products since some have more and less in the areas that count for protection, oxidation, etc.

Redline is a nice oil that I would personally select of Mobil but that is me. LE is good and so is Fleetguard oils. Amsoil is what I use. It depends on what you are looking for in the oil.

Good luck because you will get people that say, dino oil has worked so why change. Other will say I would not use Dino.

So again there are reasons why oil cost from $1.50 to $6 per quart and it is not just for a fancy bottle. Look at what goes into the oil and go with what applies to your needs. Get the hip boots ready because you are going to need them with this topic.

Greg, no offense meant, but there are a 'bazillion' threads about using synthetic oils in this forum, some very recent. A Search on Amsoil or Redline will uncover them.

They usually end up in, or in some cases start as, arguments. Too many 'experts' who think anyone who doesn't agree with them are merely uninformed so they proceed to stack 'facts' higher and higher. Neither side of the argument convinces the other.

Please read through them. If they do not answer your questions, please feel free to open up another thread.
