Coming up on 50 hr change shortly and planned on using Rotella 5-40 syn. In talking with dealer other day he recommended using only regular diesel oil, saying synthetic will cause engine to smoke.

I know some of you are running Syn; anything unusual going on?

You will here varying opinions on Synthetic oils. Rotella 15W40 is a great oil, it will last and do you a fine job - By the way it is what I recommend and am a dealer for. The synthetic version is good also - Not necessarily needed in tractor applications. It is not advisable to swap back and forth between them. Basically, Once you change the engine oil over to Synthetic you should stay with it.

We recommend more than 50 hrs before changing to synthetic. We usually tell customers 100 to 150hrs if they want to use synthetic. KIOTI Tractor recommends staying with the weight oil published in the Owners Manuals.

We're with Tony, we like the Rotella 15W40. It's what we use and sell.

You need much more break in time, as much as 200 hr.

Not sure where you hail from but Rotella 15W40 is all you need unless you regularly see temps below 0 or plan on longer drain intervals. In any event the other posters gave you good advice about waiting for 150-200 hours before changing over.

I switched over to Rotella T synthetic 5w-40 at my first 50 hour change.
I change oil once per year. I average around 150 hours per year.
I currently have 1460 hours on the tractor. It has never smoked and has never used any oil at all between oil changes using the 5w-40 synthetic oil.

As did I with my tractor.

Except in the case where the engine manufacturer calls for a specific breaking oil, and a specific period to use it, the engineers, and manufacturers I have talked to, say there is no reason anymore, to wait to switch to synthetic.

The lubricity of mineral oil is now so good, it is the same as the synthetic oil, in normal temperatures, (check for yourself). So there won't be any difference.

This is further illustrated by the fact that many brand new cars are being shipped by the factory, with synthetic oil in them.

I wonder how many people who believe in this arbitrary, waiting period, would drain the synthetic oil the factory installs, and add mineral oil for the first 200 hrs?

Rotella is, perhaps, the world's favorite diesel oil. Instead of guessing or repeating inaccurate statements, why not just hear from the true experts?

There is too much mythology and mis-information on this topic.

I also switched my CK20 to Rotella synthetic at 50 hrs.

That was nearly seven years ago and I haven't had any trouble.

I put the cenex inviro max syn. in my bobcat 235 at 80 hrs. mostly for low temp flow in our Minnesota winters and it makes a huge difference in starting. 5w40 flows better at -30 than 10 wieght,I've checked.I've put syn. oil in everything I own and no problems, truck, garden tractor, push mower so I'm sold on the stuff:thumbsup:Dave
