You could also use a 15w40 syn blend. All the major players make a 15w40 syn blend. Some are down right very good and a good value. Where you live, a 5w40 is probably overkill. If you experienced the severe cold that would make a 5w40 worth the cost. Delvac, Rotella, etc all make a syn blend 15w40. I use a Schaeffer 15w40 blend in the warm months and their 5w40 in the cold months. But I am a little higher on the globe than you. Both a 5w40 and a 15w40 have the same viscosity at operating temps. The only difference is the starting cold flow rate. Why pay more than you have to. And synthetic is only part of the equation... the add pack that makes up about 20% of any engine oil is as critical, if not more so, than the base oil. And the add pack can vary considerably between brands.

I just run Mobil Delvac 1, or Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, or Shell Rotella T6. The Shell oil is easy to find. Shell ROTELLA(R) T6 Full Synthetic Heavy Duty Engine Oil | Shell ROTELLA(R) For my tractor I rarely run it hard for more than 4 hours and even then it probably is not running that hard. T6 goes in the Dodge Cummins truck too. Car only has 476,000 miles on it running the Mobil 1 and it does not seem to use oil between 10,000 mile changes.

Rotella T 5w-40 full syn is a great buy at wally world. Rot T is a preferred HD, OTR trucker oil and has been for many years because it works for them and saves them money (MTBO....mean time between overhaul). That's what I use exclusively in my high priced new/nearly new diesel tractors.

Well, as a commercial trucker who owns the trucks (class 8), and having over 5 million miles under my seat, the argument that Rotella saves money and mean time between overhaul is not quite a valid argument. All of the major brands do quite well. I took a Cummins N-14 to 1.4 million miles (only 1 injector and an accessory drive seal replaced) and it still ran great and went right to work for the next owner. All on a Kendall 15w40 conventional and getting 30,000 mile oil changes and just stock Baldwin filters. Mobil Delvac, Chevron Delo, Shell Rotella, Schaeffer, etc all have quality oils that will do the trick. There is no one perfect "best" brand. I have seen HD truck engines grenade on all the different brands. I have seen many HD trucks also go to some incredible miles on the different brands with no major engine repairs. I had a Cummins ISX 15L that got fed a Rotella and it ate cams. I think that was mostly metalurgy related, but it didn't bode well for the Rotella protects better argument.

Engines are like firearms. I can get two fine quality .22 rifles, feed them both a fine quality ammo, and get different results. Nothing wrong with the guns or the ammo. I can then try a different fine quality ammo and the results will be different again. Some engines will do best on a Delvac, some will do best on a Delo, some will do best with Rotella. One of life's little mysteries. My current Detroit 60 12.7L is at 608,000 miles on a Schaeffer brand oil and it only uses 2 qt in 22,500 miles (50% longer than OEM recommended drain interval on this engine). Doing great and oil samples very good.

The key is getting a good quality oil that your engine has a personal liking for and meets your operational needs, and getting the best value on purchases. There are quality oils in all the major brands.

We used to have an 80 mack tractor, bought it from a milk hauler with 800K on the engine, we ran another 220K and sold her. She only had a rear rear end and an air pump replaced. 30w oils :) Yeah this was back in the 80's and early 90's.
