I have a 3010 gas tractor that guzzles gas like an old drunk guzzles beer. I also have an old 400 industrial tractor that has seen better days. The 400 does have a good diesel engine that sips fuel. My question is will the engine out of the 400 fit into the frame and connect to the transmission of the 3010? I believe that I have read that the 400 is basically a 2020 painted industrial yellow. Does anyone see any problems that might come up in this exchange? If you are wondering, the 400 doesn't have a three point hitch nor a power take off.

The engine swap could work with the correct parts. The 3010 was built in Waterloo,Ia & the 400 was built in Dubuque,Ia with a different clutch housing configurations. JD built only 2 model rowcrop tractors with this configuration(2510 & 2520) from '66-'72. The clutch housing for the 2 models were unique to just those 2 models and weren't utilized on any other models. One might could build an adapter plate but I've never seen one.

I won't say impossible because anything is possible if you haave enough time and money, but this would be a very challenging swap. Not only is the clutch housing different, but the flywheel, pressure plate, and clutch are totally different as well as the block out of the 400 is not designed to work with engine side frames like the 3010. If you had a 2510 or 2520 donor tractor for clutch housing, side frames front end, etc., you would end up with basically a 2510, but I am doubting the 2510 clutch housing would even bolt up to the 3010 transmission.

You're correct the 2510 was an orphan as it trans case fit 2510 only. I read on another tractor site where someone had installed a Dubuque engine such as this in a Waterloo tractor. BUT I agree with you that it would require a lot of SOUTHERN engineering.
