Does anyone know anything about pre-emergent herbicide for sweet corn? We plant a few acres and last year the grass and weeds got ahead of me. I do not have an applicator licence but could get one if I had to.
In Ohio I can get Atrazine and I think Dual but I know zero about effectiveness and have no experience with them.
What I would like to see is a substantial reduction in weeds and grass. Usually, I sparay with Roundup, lightly cultivate and then plant. I searched but not much on this topic that I can find.
Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I do not of any pre, or post emergent, weed killers for sweet corn. If there are, I will gladly take some.

Couldn't I get by with a lighter dose of the same products used with field corn?

I am no expert, on this matter. However, it is my understanding that the "Round up ready" crops have a special gene added, that makes them immune.

Sweet corn does not have the gene.

If you till your ground and start with no weeds or grass, Prowl works great. It costs about 100$ for 2.5 gallons. It works great and I'll spray it twice a season to keep the weeds out. Not for sure on the rates of application but for 50 gallon tank I would use around a 3/4 of a gallon. Not for sure on the exact rates but this works for me. This chemical will turn everything yellow! You do not need a pesticide card in KY to buy it. Hope this helps you out.

You spray over the top of the corn? I have used Poast for grass in other crops before.
I looked up Prowl and as apre-emergent it appears to kill weed seeds but not corn seeds? And as a post-emergent it kills grass, but not corn--which is a grass?
Tell me more and thanks.

Yep I spray the day after I plant, and then once the corn is 6inched to a foot tall. It doesn't hurt the corn once its up and growing. I've used it for pumpkins as well. I kinda look at it as a liquid version of Preen. Will not kill plants like roundup will, this works on the seeds in the soil. For me it hasn't affected any of the larger garden seeds I've planted. I was really happy with how it worked last year and will use it again. It also works on green beans.

That's what I plan to do, spray with Prowl..
Tell me what you think of this plan---I'll spray with Roundup before I work the ground, cultivate and then plant. Then next day I'll spray with Prowl. And again as corn grows, spraying over the top of the row. Does this sound right?

How deep do you plant the corn so the Prowl doesn't hurt it? Does it hurt the corn to spray over the top? Have you ever added 2-4-D to the mix? Is it right that Prowl kills grass but not the corn, which is also a grass?
Thanks for the help on this...weeds and grass got ahead of me last year and I need to recover.

I planted one acre of Mosby's white field corn on Saturday (not Roundup Ready). I tank mixed 1 quart of Atrizine (pre-emergent weed) 1 quart of Simtrol (pre-emergant grass) and 1 quart of Roundup (for any existing weeds and grass) with 15 gallons of water and sprayed after planting. My Sunday School Teacher/Southern States Manager told me that you could use Atrazine and Simtrol on "any" corn as a preemergent at planting time.

I planted the corn seed about 2" deep.

I'll let you know how it goes in a couple weeks ;) .

Please let me know how it works. THis could make life a lot easier for the sweet corn crowd. I'm doing more every year and the grass and weeds is starting to be an issue. Thanks

I am in the same boat as you. The weeds are becoming a bigger headache every year. I was thinking of using a weed wipe loaded with roundup and towing it behind the tractor between the rows. What do you guys think?

I have done this weedwiper on other crops and had poor results. It can drip, is difficult to set up and misses most of the weeds anyway. Having been at this for a long time I think the current best path is stated above with some sort of pre-emergent.
For weeds, 2-4-D works fine. The problem is grass.

A pesticide called Impact is a good pre or post emergence sweet corn spray. I use it with Atrazine plus a COC and liquid nitrogen.

COC???

I checked the corn yesterday and none has come up yet ( only 4 days since planting). Took a knife and dug in the row and found seed that is sprouting. I'll let you guys know as soon as it comes up.

Spent the day yesterday preparing ground for Indian Corn (Ornamental). I purchased 10 # of seed to plant for the stalks and to make the corn into decorations. Hopefully the spraying will work, so I don't have to cultivate. I don't have a cultivator that will work with 36" rows.

Thanks for the update. What type of planter are you using?

Thanks for the update. What type of planter are you using?

I bought two John Deere 71's from a local farmer and restrored them. I planted the first corn in 36" rows, but the planters almost run in the rear tire tracks. I went today and got the metal to build another tool bar to mount the planters on. The tool bar that I bought had the brackets for the 3pt hitch mounted at 30" so I had to mount the planters at 36" to clear the brackets. I'm going to build a toolbar that will allow me to mount the planters at 30" and to move one of the planters to the middle to plant in 60" rows.

I paid for a piece of 2 1/2" (1/4" wall) square tubing 6' long to build the toolbar out of (I ordered it over the phone). When I got on the yard to pick up the tubing the saleman had sold me something that they didn't even have.

I drove almost 50 miles to pick up the tubing. The guy working the yard found a piece of 2 1/2" cold rolled bar that was 8' long. He gave me that instead. I think I came out pretty good.

I'll try to take pictures and start a new thread on building the toolbar.

I used a 30" spacing on mine and set the rear wheels to a 60" center and it put my seed just inside the rear tire track. The 30" also gave a greater mass of plants to keep the weeds down. My brackets didn't interfere but it can be a problem.

My method for weed control in sweet corn is:

1. Work the ground as early as I can in the spring (chisel plow and finish disc)

2. After a couple of rain showers and warm weather small weeds will begin to sprout. I hit them with roundup (not the residual version!!). This will usually take out any grasses that Prowl won't catch.

3. 1 to 2 weeks later, if no weeds exist, I plant (flex 71 planter).

4. Once corn is up (Leaf stages 1 -3) I spray with prowl 3.3EC (and 2,4-d if weeds exist). I try to minimize the corn's exposure to Prowl as it can intefere with root development on sweet corn. Especially the super sweet varieties.

5. I won't usually have to put down any more Prowl the rest of the season. I plant my corn on 30" rows, so crop cover shades out all but the hardiest of weeds that get by the Prowl.

6. Flame weed any grasses that start to come back or use hand applied roundup down the rows being careful not to get any on the corn plants.

Once the corn is putting on ears, I don't apply any chemicals other than Sevin (insecticide) and even that is only if I need to. Then in the fall, I burn any weeds/grasses down with roundup and wait until next spring.

I do this same procedure, minus the 2,4-d, for my green beans, tomatoes, strawberries, etc as Prowl is listed for almost all garden veggies and fruits.
