It's more than just chip availability...lots of other inventory items are in short supply. I have an F150 that has a couple recalls on it. Something about a bad bolt in the passenger seat, and something about a leaky master cylinder. So I keep getting notices from Ford to get the recalls done...and the service department at my Ford dealer says the parts needed to fix the recall are still on backorder - been that way for months. Got friends with Polaris UTVs who can't change their engine oil because no one has any oil filters!

I was at a local Ford dealer this afternoon to get the oil changed & tires rotated on my 2020 F 250. Zero new Super Duties on the lot. Only one 2017 and one 2019. Along with a pretty skimpy selection of F 150's. Yet Ford keeps sending me $2500 "exclusive" cash offers for a new truck when nobody has one to sell.
I haven't tractor shopped since just over a year ago. June/July 2020 any place that I checked locally seemed to have some Kubota BX2380's around but no one was really interested in dealing realistically. So I picked up a low hour (28) used unit several states away from a well known dealer. Even with the $600 delivery fee I still saved myself in the $3k area.

"Chip Shortage" makes an easy short term argument, but it's been a year now. That excuse is beginning to sound like a repeat.

Not now days with people wanting the cars to drive themselves.
Me, bring back the old days, a chip was either Lays or Frito's, points, plugs and condenser every 20-30K, grease nipples in every part, battery was dead.....coast it down a hill and pop the clutch, the radio played...well...radio stations and that was it, you used a key to open the door not a fob that does everything but scratch yr a$$, had to hit the gas once to set the choke before starting etc..............Mike

Then why not do it?

The reason? Proprietary rights IMO. That said, I could be easily wrong.

Be it a car, tractor or thermostat, the manufacturer want's control. The downside to my line of thinking is then the manufacturer becomes a slave to to who makes thir OEM parts.

Having spent a career doing engine design and development, working for a manufacturer, I call bullcrap on this one.
