Super M Starter

Hi Everyone! Sugar Grove Farmer Here! Thank you very much for the great info! This seems to be a great place to visit! I asked a question on a 4020 John Deere steering issue and got some great answers, I did not purchase the 4020. As it turns out it did have some costly repairs that made it not such a great value. I did however purchase a 1953 Super M Farmall. The starter was rebuilt and the armature was turned down where the brushes make contact, The groves are no longer there, When I try to start it the brushes seem to weld themselves to the surface on opposite sides. Can I carefully re grove that area to correct the problem?
