i am troubleshooting my super c. i was in reverse when there was a single loud knock and the tractor died. It started up again but it has low RPM and no power. There is compression in all the cylinders and all the rods are moving. A friend said it sounds like i may have jumped a cam. How do i check if the cam is lined up with the crank?

Your front cyl (just behind the fan) is your #1 cyl. Take all the plugs out so you can see into the cyl, as well as easily turn the engine over by hand; and pop off the dist. cap (leave the rotor on) Oh, note which plug wire/position it is at on the dist cap for #1); when you are at TDC on #1. The rotor should be pointed at the location where the distibutor says #1 should be. NOTE: Technically, I'd also take off the valve cover to ascertain when both the intake/exhaust are completely closed to make sure you aren't off 180 degrees from TDC. Hope you understand what I'm sayimg here....If your dist. rotor is pointing somewhere but where #1 is, you have jumped timing. Let us know what you find....then we can give you more info....BobG in VA

One other note on TDC: There is a mark on your flywheel for TDC, but sometimes is very difficult to find. You will need a good flashlight and something to clean off crude from 50 or so years to find it. That's why I suggested the old dist rotor trick first...BobG in VA

2nd Note: As I sit here thinking....double check if when you push your throttle lever that your governor rod actually moves the carb throttle plate. You may have lost a govenor spring or two (actually there are only 2). BobG in VA

thanks bob. I took the plugs out to check the compression and cleaned them before i put them back. Now it seems to run fine. kind of simple and silly of me i guess. i still don't know what the knock was. i am gonna do some work in the field with it today. If i have any problems i will let you know. Thank again.

Isn't the Super-C a great tractor? I had a 1953 w/ wide front end.
I built a hudraulic FEL for it, Used it to build a log home. Worked
great. No power steering made it kind of tough on the arms.
Finally had to sell it; but I sure miss it. Had it about 15 years[more
or less]. and never had a problem with it. Cleaned plugs ocassionally.
Changed oil & filter every 2 years. Hope you continue to have
good service with yours and with no problems.
Just thought I would comment when I saw Super-C. ENJOY

I bet the "knock" was excess carbon in one of your cylinders.....Once you get it ready run it hard....the more your work it the better it will run. BobG in VA
