We bought this little battery tiller/cultivator last year to help with weeding. We didn't get to use it last year since it was a late purchase, but so far this year it's really helped out. I can cover a lot more ground compared to a hoe. It runs about 30-40 minutes per charge and I can probably weed about 1000 square feet in that amount of time. It charges in about 45 minutes. It's light weight and works better on slightly moist soil. I'm able to get very close to plants with it and only have to pull the weeds within a few inches of the main stem. I recommend it.

By the way, the link provided doesn't include batteries. With batteries it's $268.99 farther down the page.

I've quit tilling.

mulch only.

The tractor mounted chipper shredder provides the finished material, the forest trees we live under supplies the raw stock. We could use more sun however. ;-)

I used to use fresh cut grass to keep weeds down and I've tried newspaper under it. Unfortunately, the thistles fight their way through it along with a few other weeds. This method is working for us this year, we'll see if I can keep up until harvest.
