I don't want to spend a lot of money (under $400) for a tool box to put on my truck (07 Dodge 2500). I've looked at Northern, TSC, and Advance Auto. I don't need a lot of security as I only plan to keep tie downs, a couple load binders, a and a few tools int he box. What do you suggest?

Lowes. KOBALT If you just want to keep the sun and rain off of your tie downs etc. Pretty thin, but you get what you pay for.

back in December I bought a UWS black, low profile, DEEP box for my truck. never owned a low profile box before, much less one as deep as the one I have now, but I can honestly say that now I know what I was missing all those years. this tool box will stay with me and be put on my next truck. paid exactly $352. I put it on myself though, not because I wanted to save $20 but because I wanted to do it right and make sure it was straight. the UWS box I have is far better qaulity then what you see at Auto Zone, but yet not the quality of a Rawson/Koenig. CDI's seem to be popular around my area but when I compared it with the UWS, it was a no brainer.

Also keep in mind that UWS will ship you a tool box to your house FREE OF CHARGE for the life of your toolbox if the powder coating begins to chip off or there is a defect with the tool box. you just take the old one to your dealer you bought it from and he will do the rest.

I have the trac rack system, including box. Very nice, but pricey

I have bought metal and plastic boxes for the truck over the years. Usually from Walley World. I never screwed them into the trucks. Instead I would build some PT wood frames to lock the box in place. that way I could somewhat easily remove the box if I needed the space.

For a few items to store, a small plastic box might work. Just make sure it does not leak. I had one that leaked like a screen door on a submarine.

The metal ones worked just fine. They sit out by the "barn" hold chemicals and some tools. Since they lock up it keeps the kids out of them and nobody is going to steal them easily.

Later,
Dan

My wife bought me my Northern Tool aluminum diamond plate truck box for my birthday about 4 years ago. It is the single lid standard depth version with a polished finish. Over all I am satisfied with it and would probably buy another one. The only thing that I would do different next time is spend the extra money and get the graphite colored powder coat finish instead of the polished. The Salt / calcium chloride that we treat the roads here in NE Ohio with all winter makes short work of that shiny polished finish.

Delta is a decent box at a fair price,
If you get one be careful of how you install it. I worked for a utility for 34 yrs and all our boxes were bolted in, in a few yrs the beds where the boxes were bolted started spliting due the fact the bed could not flex, Our mechanics came up with the idea of putting heavy springs on the bolts that would allow very slight movement, it seemed to work on our trucks.

My nextdoor neighbor and I both have black poly toolboxes. Never again. The way he griped about his last week, I feel I can vote "no" for him, too. Mine took on water during a rainstorm and soaked my tools. His warped from sunlight and won't lock shut anymore. I had to drill my lock last week to get mine open. Good fun.
