suggestions for ford superduty/excursion alternator

I need one, no hurry, but should I buy from the dealer, or is there a place to a buy a better one for the same price? or one just as good for less? I would rather pay a little more, and not have to worry about failure at the worst possible time. thank you to all who help.

Some items I certainly like a dealer for....for quality reasons.

But I have never had any issues with parts store alternators. Napa, oriley, advanced, autozone, etc.

Since you aint in a hurry and can wait on shipping....that opens a whole host of online vendors. And can probably get OEM brand (probably motocraft?), same part you can get at a dealer, but for a parts store price

I'd find a local, reputable shop and have the original rebuilt. Especially if you are in no dire need for it right away. The dealer will rape you and aftermarket stuff are sometimes of questionable quality.

For parts like that, parts store is fine. As good as OEM, maybe better, maybe worse, but the difference in price is often big.

I bought a brand new ACDelco alternator for my '99 7.3 F250 last year online for less than a so-called rebuilt/reman. Got over 15k miles on it now and nary a problem. Don't remember what vendor I used but it didn't take long to find it and it shipped within a couple of days.

Problem is Ford doesn't make new starters or alt for old stuff any more they are all rebuilt. Probally from the same sorce all the chains get them from . I buy from Nappa cause life time warrenty. As soon as my voltage gets low I go to Nappa and test batteries and alt for free .:drink:

Buy from local big box auto parts store which will give you a lifetime warranty from store.

Not all reman parts are of same quality. I would buy a new alternator from Napa, skip the reman. 2nd choice would be an OEM version online, and lastly the dealer.

Do any junkyards still let you pull your own parts? Haven't seen one that did in years. Probably a combination of liability and too many parts hitching a ride out inside toolboxes.
Even if they did, getting at parts in modern vehicles can, and usually is a challenge to say the least.

For my F350 7.3L the factory starters died with age, but it was common starter used on lots of equipment, the newer ones are built better, I found a new unit with lifetime about 1/3 smaller and cranks faster than original. $160 vs $380. I'd buy rebuilt with warranty

Alternators

This. Late 7.3 and 6.0 Powerstrokes come with weak electrical systems. Read Ed's maintenance tips #1, #2, and #3. Maintenance Tips

Do not replace weak with weak (stock OEM alternators). Make sure to upgrade your alternator wiring. On my 6.0 F-350, Ford uses two 12 ga wires/fusible links in order to transfer 140 supposed amps from the OEM alternator. Pathetic.

You can buy a Motorcraft alternator from most parts stores. Same one the dealer will sell you. Some dealers will price match as well. My second choice would be a Denso reman.
Ran my own shop for over 30 years and these would be my top choice.
