Sub soiler, Middle buster - HuH?

OK, I admit I'm EXTREMELY new to all this - they just delivered my equipment today. BUT I can't find any reasonable explanation of a middle buster or sub soiler and when you use one over the other. Can someone please explain?

I bought a subsoiler to dig a trench so I could bury an electric line for my daughter's play house. Some people use them to deep till the ground if it is overly hard and compacted. If not for the need to run the electric line, I would have never had a use for one at all.

A middlebuster is also called a potato plow, it digs a nice little trench about a half foot deep. I got one when I got my subsoiler, but I've never used it.

I've been using mine to dig up potatoes.. makes digging them up a breeze.. and it doesn't cut/hurt the potatoes in the process.

I also have a subsoiler that I have used to run elec. lines to my shed. Same thing Bob did. I don't know that I'd use it for water lines, though. A subsoiler (mine at least) won't dig deep enough to get a water line beneath the frost line. S.C. doesn't have the winter temps that some of our northern TBN'rs get, but it gets cold enouth to freeze a waterline that isn't at least 3 ft. in the ground. I was able to cut about a 2 ft. deep trench through hard pack GA. clay this summer for the power line, and I'm hoping it's deep enough that the electricity won't freeze this winter! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
