Sub Compact owners, a couple questions for you

The BX can certainly do everything you ask. however, given the fact you are used to larger tractors, have an orchard, I can't heelp but wonder if a B series with a 60 or 72 inch rear finishing mower would be better? It would allow you to mow close to plants with the over hangs. You can also use RFM to mow ponds better with the 3 pt offset to farthest over to edge of pond or back in just to edge so you are not getting in wet area. Since you don't want another tractor with fel, I'd add weights to front of your new dedicated mowing machine.

I would need to look the b series over but I want the machine to be maneuverable and nimble. I had a 72" 3pt finish mower with my 1920 but I didn't like having it behind me. I prefer front and mid mounted implements with my back issues. The ponds are future ideas and not anything I'm too worried about. I have less chance getting stuck around my ponds then i do in the yards. The ponds relieved the underground springs so the water goes into the pond instead of up through the ground, further away though the springs surface where ever they can.

I mow about 3 acres with a BX2360. I really like
the job it does. It's comfortable to ride and the 60" mmm sticks out past the rear wheels just far enough to get close to flower beds and clothes lines. The turning radius is good too. The only drawback would be the rigid ROPS that make it difficult to mow close around my fruit trees. The BX series tractors are easy to live with.

I would say that our B7500 is as maneuverable as our BX2660. Per Tractordata, the B7500 has a 6.6' turning radius in 2wd while the BX2660 7.2' turning radius in 4wd. The B7500 is 0.8' longer, but it fits in tighter spaces than the BX

Like I said, I would want to look it over but definitely know I do not want a 3pt finish mower (unless its a front 3pt).

I started looking at the x700 series that was recommended last night online and really like the 4 wheel steer. I was at a kubota dealer today picking up an excavator and while in the lobby they had a couple smaller riders that look about the same size and same class as my cub cadet. I didn't see or look for any of the bx, b or any other mowers as i was there for a purpose and needed to get back home by a certain time.

I'm hoping to have more time to look around and really get a feel for these different mowers. When I'm ready I will demo a few and see which one I like best.

I currently have a Cub Cadet GT1554 (54" deck) and I don't really plan to replace it just yet but with watching the threads where you BX owners go to battle over the Mahindra Max being called sub compacts it got me to wondering about taking the jump to a sub compact when I do get ready to replace the CC. I mow about 3 acres between my parents main farm and mine. I keep the orchard mowed behind the house and the CC currently mows about 1 acre an hour with what I have to contend with. I can see potentially mowing up to 4 acres at a time if I start trying to maintain around the two ponds (my daughter loves fishing). I do have a few wet spots from where the springs pop up and the CC loves to get stuck in them if I try to get too close.

so I am curious as to if you guys think a BX would actually be a good option for me or if I should look at a different direction. It won't have a loader or backhoe or anything else other then a mower deck (thinking a 60" would work but nothing larger without doing a lot of ground work). I would love to be able to fill it up from the diesel tanks we have on the farm (I'm trying to get away from needing to keep gas in 5 gallon containers). I really haven't done much research on lawn and garden equipment so would appreciate any information you guys would like to share as to what I should be thinking about when the time comes to upgrade. My ground is mostly flat except along the road is a little steep. I'm working on filling up that area to make the edge more gradual and not as dangerous but its a very long stretch (around 400 yards) and not a high priority so I bring a bucket or two of fill up every so often and spread it and have been filling my way from the house outwards.

I will admit I love the concept that John Deere had with the drive over deck and don't know if Kubota has that option or is working to implement a similar system but I would find it handy. So please have fun with this thread, I'm looking to expand my knowledge ahead of time so that I am prepared for when I do decide to upgrade (I'm thinking either 2013 or 2014 at the latest). I would like it to be easy maintenace (easy access to grease fittings, oil drain plugs and fill ports and those sorts of things my Cub fails with).

Hello Robert,

I am going to jump in here with an idea for you.

How would you feel about a 3 spindle towed rotary that can be offset?

The brand of the mower is Acrease and its been out in the
public for a few years now.

You would be able to use the Cub Cadet much less and use
the acrease towed unit for the majority of the mowing.

I know its a gas engine but you could always convert to diesel
using a Hatz Diesel with an electric start.

This mower offers an electric start option/or is offered a standard equipment
but I dont remember which it is.

I do not know if you have an Acrease dealer in your part of New York State
but I know that Mazourek farms in Newfield, New York handles them and has
several units mowing cemetaries.

I have been looking at similar mowers for under the orchard trellis but have not bit the bullet just yet. My John Deere dealer has a smiliar unit available for $750 and I have been toying with the idea but am really not excited about spending too much money on it only to be disappointed with how it works. I have seen a lot of these trailed mowers bought, used once or twice then put out on the used market because the owners didn't care for them. And with the orchard trellis there are a lot of trees it will bump into so I would want to modify it a little more to be able to deflect off the trees easier.

But I would like to replace the Cub Cadet with a higher quality mower. If I do go with a trailed mower for the orchard it would not be used every mowing and only in the orchard. I don't need under the trees to look like a yard as I will use a combination of chemical weed control along with mowing. I just want to be able to maintain it better but my main concern with this thread is to learn about whats out there for a primary mower and get everyones thoughts on them.

The front 3pt was more of a joke, being that is the only way I would want a 3pt finish mower is if it was on the front of the tractor. I would have no need or use for any front mounted attachments for this machine unless it is a mowing deck. I don't even need or want a 3pt or pto on the back as I would never use it. I keep trying to think of other uses I could use this machine for and can't come up with any. It would be too small for every other task I would have and I have plenty of other tractors for those tasks anyway. I will look at the B series and have a lot of time to study all them before I am ready to buy.

I do know a full ROPS will not be a good option and I am not sure I would want a dedicated mower with any type of ROPS system. I just don't want to trim my apple trees up higher to allow it under and I also don't want to keep multiple mowers in order to mow the property. The trailed mower I referred to in the previous post is only for a small section that I currently mow. I have 7 rows of trellised apple trees that I can't mow under or around because of the way the trees were trained. All the other trees I can mow tight up to the trunk with the way I have them trimmed using my Cub Cadet.

We use our BX for mowing and snowplowing, not useful for much else. I took the 3 point off when we first got it and it has never gone back on. The cover on the rear PTO has never been removed and probbaly wont until we sell it.

The ROPS on the BX comes off with 4 bolts on each side. The one on the B folds.
