Anyone have any information on removing the engine? I just bought this unit yesterday thinking it just needed a PTO adjustment and come to find 3 of the 4 engine mounting bolts missing. The one that was left is a 3/8-16 USS self tapping bolt. After going to the JD dealer and seeing what belongs in there M8X125, I'm going to remove the engine and inspect the mounting holes. ****.

have seen more than one STX38 shear of the engine mounting bolts, Chances are they are in the block, and will have to be drilled and easy outed.

Thanks for the insight, Randy. Any suggestions for removing the PTO clutch with limited hand tools? I have a 13MM socket on a ratchet on the bolt on top of the engine, and another ratchet with a 3/4 socket on the clutch, but it's really tight. Really wish I had even an electric impact right about now.....

OK. I got the engine off, repaired the mounting bolt holes, got it all back together. When it's running and I push in the clutch, the engine idle increases slightly. But if I go to engage the blades or the transmission, it DIES. What do I need to do?? I can see the belt above the PTO moving, it looks loose. Please HELP! My grass is going to be up to my ***** soon!!!!!

I had a similar issue with my 318. It was the seat switch not completely connected when I put it back together.

I found the upper belt (I assume drive belt) not in it's pulleys. Burned a spot off of it. Took the PTO back off and I'm going to get it lined up. We'll see what happens. If I have to replace that belt (drive), anybody been there, done that?

UPDATE: (To those who care)

The seat cut off switch was bypassed with a piece of wire. The wire was loose. Hmmmm. Cut and restripped the wire and VOILA! That takes care of that. Got all the belts lined up and by gosh we're cutting grass. Now to go to JD and get oil and a filter, a plug, a seat safety switch, and some misc stuff and hopefully I'll get a couple of seasons out of it. Thanks for everyone's input.
