STX 38 starter

The starter on my mower quit today (Kohler CV 13S). The dealer wants $172 plus tax for one!
Has anyone tried rebuilding one of these?
Any recommendations for a source of good used parts?

I've learned a lesson I'll bet a lot of people already know!

After a lot of fooling around with the dealer, it turns out a set of brushes are almost $55 and would take 2-3 days to get unless I wanted to pay freight!
I looked online and found complete starters with a warranty for $65 including freight.
Arrived next day and works perfectly.

Fortunately, I have another mower so I could waste time fooling around with this.

Are you sure that the starter is bad? If it does nothing when you turn the key it could be a wire problem or your PTO switch is in the on position. Either one could cause the starter to do nothing. I had a mouse chew a wire off right next to the starter (a small wire plugged into the bottom of the starter solinoid) and the started was dead. Spliced the wire and everything went back to normal. Another time when mowing I turned the mower off without disengaging the PTO switch. Same thing, no power to the starter, Shut the switch off and everything returned to normal.

It no longer had enough torque to spin the engine with 12V across it. When I took it apart one of the brush wires had burnt off. I tried to attach a new wire, but ended up destroying the brush.
