Stump Removal

I would like to know how people remove stumps. I have the stump grinder, but find it slow for large stumps. It also leaves a lot behind. I have tried pulling trees over while digging a trench around them. This works pretty well and gets out the entire stump, but can also take quite a while.

Yeah, a big stump takes hours to grind but has still been easier and faster than any alternative I could do. A 30" oak stump that's 1' above ground would likely take me 3 hours to get it below ground. Most smaller stumps are usually good for an hour.

And I've done lots of em. Just takes patience, some noise-cancelling headphones hooked up to music, something cool in the cupholder, and more patience. Before I got the PT, the stumps just stayed there, which is why "I've done lots of em".... 30 years of accumulated stumps.

I think you have the best tool (stump grinder) to remove stumps with a 422. It makes short work of small stumps and though it takes longer on larger one's, it can still get the job done. The 422 just doesn't have enough weight to practically muscle big stumps out. If you have lots of big stumps, it would be better to hire someone with a large grinder and use the PT to clean-up, back-fill the holes, etc.. Just my opinion.

RegL, I agree with your statement. I just hoped someone had found a better answer. There were many good comments and suggestion. I think I will build a nibbler attachment for the minihoe. I think if I can clip one root at a time it may help. Of course the stump grinder does this too.

I found another suggestion on a different thread. They suggested using a sawsall with a pruning blade to help get through roots. The blade would be ruined, but they are pretty cheap. I think this is what I will try next.
