Stump Grinder Woodland Mills WG24?

Igizzmo Did Woodland Mills come good on the crappy weld?

I emailed them after the drive shaft broke and I got a reply from sales saying they forwarded it to the technical department and have had “no” response. I was going to bring up the weld when they replied but now I’m thinking they got their sale and they don’t care. I hate thinking that but customer service is not working too well for them.

funny.... I bought a WC68 chipper from them last week, assembled it over the weekend... found a few small paint chips, called them, they asked for pictures, I know have a bottle of touch up paint on the way. Once I get an hour on the chipper, I'll post up a review.

do you want the paint code?

I picked up a lightly used WG24 late last summer. I had around 30 stumps of all types and sizes. I put it on the back of a JD955. I found it worked very well. It takes some getting used to, and no, my neck would not be happy after 8 hours of using it. But it was great for my use. Simple, easy to mount even without a QH. It gets down around 5-6 inches, plenty for seeding or sod, not enough for footings. I have used the Vermeer 3 wheeler with the 25 hp Kohler. That's much slower and an absolute pig to use. And renting it is not cheap either. I cut these stumps over a couple months, it was nice to do it on my schedule, not the rental companies. :)

Used the WG24 to clear out some large rock hard oak stumps from a clearing job this week. I also chipped 3 dump trailers full of chips with the WC88 chipper. I am extremely pleased with both machines. The stump grinder is an absolute beast as soon as you get used to it. Not sure how anyone could complain about these units as they are extremely well made and perform great. The driveshaft twisting is either due to cutting the shaft too short (as appears to me from the pictures above) or operator error. If the shaft length is correct and the ship clutch set correctly then taking too large of bites or/and moving too fast. I drove 30 minutes each way to a job this morning and ground 3 large oak stumps and was back home 2 hours from the time I left:) The creep speed, shuttle shift and e-PTO on the M7060 is the cat's meow for this grinder.

Well I have had the WG-24 for a good while now and it has been excellent! I think it is easily the best value stump grinder on the market. I have used it up until now on my M7060 and although I was very happy with it on that tractor I shortened the PTO shaft and tried it on my BX 2200 with only 15 PTO HP just to see how it did......totally impressed! I actually like it much better on the little tractor as you can see better and maneuver quicker and easier. I have used it enough to know how to best operate it so I can grind a stump just as fast, if not faster with the lil BX. Woodland Mills says you need 20 PTO HP minimum but the BX has less and it will still take a full bite each pass, just keeping the travel speed as slow as needed with the hydro pedal. It is also even more comfortable as I can throw my right leg over the rear fender to sit sideways and run the hydro peel with my left foot. I will probably add some padding for my leg on the fender since in the coming months I have literally hundreds of stumps to grind. This is one of the best attachments I own.

What is the teeth grinding regimene. I have green teeth and they are great but the upcoming sharpening has me nervous.

I have done a couple dozen stumps thus far and the carbide tipped teeth all still look like new. There is no rock where I live so i expect them to last a long time and they are easily replaceable although pricey for a full set of 36. A set of 6 death runs $99 so a full set would be $600. Perhaps you can sharpen them but I have not had to cross that bridge. https://cdn.woodlandmills.ca/images/products/accessories/wg24-1001/wg24-1001-1.jpg

Wow, lpigott, thanks for the update. I had thought that I could not use the stump grinder on my BX 25, which has a PTO horsepower of 17.5, but now that I see your post, I know that I would be OK if I got one.

Yes you will love it. I was actually amazed at how well it handled it since I had been running it on my M7060, which did fine since I have creep gears, but as stated above I will probably only use it on the BX going forward. I saw a youtube video if a guy running one on a subcompact Jon Deere and decided to try it and just buy another longer PTO shaft if it did not work out, but no need for that now! Key is to work from right to left on the stump (right as you are sitting in the tractor seat looking forward) and take 3 or 4 inches at a time so you employ the front face of the grinder where all the teeth are. If the grinder starts tilting just stop or slow down until it catches up. If the grinder is jumping around then you are not doing it right.
