Thank you for the review. Depending on where we end up next, I'll be looking at one of these pretty hard if I have a bunch of stump work to do.

They do work best coming in from the edge. It also lets you get at a stump you can't get high enough for. Sometimes one can't cut them low enough.

Just ordered a WG24. After seeing posts about having to twist and look backward all the time I ordered a double camera rear view, think that will save my neck cricks. WG24 comes with a slip clutch so shear pins are not an issue, also tilts out if you try to cut to fast or deep. Have 5- 36" stumps on my property, called closest grinder (50 mile away) he said it will be $720.00 to grind the 5, have 10 more trees to cut down about the same size, which would be a total of $2160.00, Felt it would make more sense to buy grinder for $2,576.00 with shipping and 12 extra teeth, then I could grind mine and then some for people around neighborhood (have already had requests) this will get some or all of my money back. Thinking of charging $2.50 per inch across, This would be $90.00 for a 36" stump $60.00 for 24", discount to $2.00 inch for multiple stumps (I Think I can make some money at that) Local mans price works out to $4.00 per inch $144 for 36" stump. "Going to give it a try".

If I was a great businessman I would be rich, but for what free advice is worth I suggest starting out at a higher price closer to what the established guy is charging. If you are not getting the work you want you can always drop your price. If you start out too cheap, and half the price of your competition is too cheap, you are basically giving money away.

Another thing to consider is that your competitor may have licenses and insurance and a higher overhead. If you start out cheap without the required business license and insurance (assuming it is required where you live, maybe not) your competitor likely will turn you in. Again, free advice is worth what you pay for it.

Not really wanting to start a business just want to get my stumps cut on the cheap, Most likely will sell grinder when paid off.

This is an affordable option at an reasonable price point. The lack of slip clutch would be a deal breaker for me as I can't imagine how many shear pins you'd eat up. I've not run one of the feature packed pto grinders but I hired out a 38" red oak grind last year to a guy with a 80 hp morbark tracked grinder.
It was $250 for the one stump and it took him a solid 1.25 hr to grind it 3-4" below grade. I can't think that the pto version would have been much slower.
If I had a large amount of stumps to grind it seems the pto options are pretty cost effective over hiring out at least in my area.

Matt

Got my woodland mills grinder couple of days ago, it came with a slip clutch, Started working on a 48" at ground level stump, Does take some learning for depth and speed but is getting the job done, First thing I did was mount a backup camera, that really helps, I am 63 and can't sit for long twisted sideways. My Kubota b-7800 has 22 PTO HP and has no problem spinning it, If you go to fast or deep it will tilt up then when you slow down it cuts its way back level. Thinking about mounting a small light bar to shine on the cutter as it is kind of dark under there. It only cuts going forward because of way teeth are mounted and also could not tip up going backward.

I continue to be very pleased with my Woodland Mills WG24 Stump Grinder.
Learning curve is not steep. Only issue is having to twist around to look back while running it.
I'm impressed with how much I'm able to get done using this machine.
It has easily paid for itself already.

Could be out to lunch, but you can compare three different models with 19-19.5 PTO HP (540 RPM) but they are all at different engine RPM. For example the BX2670 is at 3068 rpm, the B2650 is at 2500 RPM, and the L2501 is at 2105 RPM. If you convert those numbers into torque you'd end up with roughly 33.3 ft-lbs, 41 ft-lbs, and 48.6 ft-lbs, this is why the bigger displacement would or at least should run something like the stump grinder without bogging down as much.

Actually had a chance to use my BX42 wood chipper on both my previous B2650 as well as a friends BX25D, it was quite surprising the difference in how fast the smaller BX engine would bog down or stall compared to the B2650, there would likely be a similar difference between a L2501 and a B2650 as well.

Actually, with 19 HP at the PTO, PTO spinning at 540, the torque at the PTO will be identical for all machines, period. Simple consider the PTO shaft to be the output shaft of an engine; what goes on before it matters not in the least.
