stump grinder vs backhoe

my neighbor has an older vermeer 206 stump grinder (only 34 hours!) that he is willing to let me use but having never used one i wonder if it would just better to use my backhoe to remove the stumps. what do you think, stump grinder or backhoe?

Stump grinder, no filling in holes.The great thing is you don't have to buy one....:cool2:

Try it out. If it works give the man some money towards replacing the cutters for using it. Alot better than tearing out roots and disposal. Good luck.

Keep in mind that if you grind in down, there will always be something in the ground to decay. You will continually have to fill in that area in the future

I have both and would stump grind anything above 12" diameter!

i would use the grinder it will take longer but theres no stump to burn

Use your backhoe to clear away any rocks then grind them - by far a better solution. The roots will decompose very slowly - I have done both and grinding is the best way and less mess and root cleanup.

Just get down below the ground enough 6-8" then topdress with dirt and seed. The 206 is not a big grinder so it will take time for the big stumps.

It depends if the area will be used for a concrete foundation. Dig them up if that is the case.

Looks like I should take him up on the offer..these are just random alder stumps from trees I have cut down in various places. The motivation is to get rid of them so I no longer have to mow/trim around them.. most of them are cut off a foot or so above ground. Should I chainsaw cut them closer to the ground before grinding? Would think this would minimize the time on the grinder if I did so..

Yes, cut them as close to the ground as you can then grind them.
