Anyone ever use studs on their tires
I have a hilly driveway that is paved
I will be using a rear mounted snowblower
I remember my dad swore by them on his cars
Any thoughts (please only useful)
Thanks
Dave

Welcome...
Never heard of studs on tractor tires. What size tractor and tires do you have? There are a variety of tire chains to be had. What kind you get depends on snow/ice conditions and the topography of use. Ice pick chains for the toughest of winters...

Yup I found some here
I’m seeing that they work well but want to hear if some had used them
Thanks

I swear by them. 👍
They'll never beat tire chains, but they make enough difference for me. These have been in the rear tires for 4-5 years, I leave them in as removal ruins that spot for re installation.

You can see that they're spaced in a pattern and there's not really that many of them compared to what it could be.
Some of these are in their 2nd set of tires while the balance were new. They're about a buck each, cheap enough but iirc there's around 200 in each rear !
Pretty good sized tire (18.4/r30 or 480/80r30 metric) for your comparison

I have studs on the ag tires fitted to the Hurlimann.
Put them in a long while back.
The fender clearance on that tractor won't allow chains.
The studs grip well, on icy surfaces , hard packed or scraped snow, but don't help much when it's soft and deep.

I've got blowers on a couple of the other tractors that do most of the snow moving all winter, The Hurlimann is fitted with a seven foot scrape blade and the FEL of course.

The stud holes are starting to show cracks around, but I haven't noticed any fallen out. Last spring I was making paths for collecting maple sap. moving the deep stuff and got hung up on the frame by a maple stump. Those studs clawed some real grooves in that stump getting out. ;-)

I've used Grip Studs for years. They work well on ice.

We used to use studs in snow tires in Michigan up until about 1975 when they were outlawed because lawmakers felt they were causing too much damage to the road surface. Instead, Michigan stepped up the use of road salt which in some people's minds, mine included, causes even more damage to roads from the melt getting into the cracks and sub-surface then re-freezing, over & over, etc., not to mention the damage to vehicles and environment, end of rant. Anyway, studs do increase traction, but when they chew through ice to the pavement underneath, they don't stop chewing. Ice, asphalt, concrete, it all chews up nicely. My garage floor and driveway is proof of this from the studs in my snowmobile tracks.

Here is one of my snowmobile tracks with embedded carbide studs

Here is what happens when trying to load a snowmobile into a trailer if you let the track spin, just a little, when the last few inches are not yet onto the trailer ramp.

This is my driveway, but a different snowmobile.

Studded tractor tires on paved hills, and I would expect a lot of scratched up pavement.

Disappointing thing is that someone could make a decent winter tire for tractors, especially compacts. I was driving back when studded tires were around, I remember having 4 studded Goodyear Suburbanite Polyglas Belted Snow Tires on my 1969 Mustang in the early 70's. I now know that a studless Bridgestone Blizzak is far superior in nearly every test compared to the older studded tires.

Chains will damage a concrete floor if the tractor is parked inside. Just a little at a time but it adds up. Laying boards where the tires will go helps, but it's kind of a bother.

Studs work well. You will mark up your asphalt if you spin the tires or turn the wheels without moving.
