Hey guys! :)

I've gotten stuck trying to fix my Satoh S370D. I need to remove the head to clean up the valves and find out why the compression is so low. Not to mention whatsup with the blowback thru the intake ports. ;)

My problem is I've got everything stripped away from the head and block, taken the 6 head bolts off and wire brushed the seam to the block. After a couple of rounds of gentle persuasion... can't seem to break the head loose, budge it or anything

I've played with stubborn heads before (inline 6s ;) ) and been using mostly a 5 lb sledge on wooden blocks, etc. and the 2 cylinder head looks pretty robust, but...

You know, I don't want to trash it.

Help me Mr. Wizards! :)

I'd use a small cold chissel and tap it in a corner to seperate the head from the block.
Worst you'll do is slightly nick a corner of the block or head where it does not really matter.

Another method would be to crank the starter and let the compression 'pop' the head loose.

I ahve used both methods.

Thanks for the hints Piloon. :)

I was reading my post a couple of hours after I posted and was thinking what a putz!

Got really annoyed with myself and popped it lose by using a wonder bar.

I put the curved part right under the really beefy part where the water mainfold bolts to the front narrow part of the head, the curve of the bar and the head being a close fit. Gave it a few wacks with the trusty 5lb sledge and tada!

Got it all back together just a few minutes ago, after cleaning up the head and the valves. There was a buildup on the #2 exhaust value that apparently kept it from closing all the way.

I was hoping for the super deluxe mega happy ending with the engine firing on the first try... NOT to be!

But at least the intake and exhaust now seem to be in the right places. ;)

I was told this thing quit running something like 10 years ago when he ran it out of fuel. Apparently I'm like the 5th guy to try to get this thing running and from the looks of it, it now has clear plastic fuel line and a riding mower gas tank just sitting there, they got pretty desperate.

These guys weren't dopes, so you gotta figure they must have been barking up the wrong tree?

I'm going to put some fresh oil and filter on it tommorrow, unfortunately the pressure gauge I'm using doesn't screw in to the glow plug holes...

This is my first diesel project... So I would REALLY appreciate any helpful suggestions. :)

Put a little oil in the cylinder to increase the compression , give it a snort of Aerostart . If it starts on the Ether and dies again look for fuel delivery problems .
