After reading many horror stories of guys removing their hydraulic filters, I was prepared. I bought these chain vice grips. Locking Chain Clamp
Had absolutely no problem with either the hydraulic or hst filter. The hydraulic filter was really on there too.

Cheaper and just as effective is the type that looks like a seat belt on a 4 inch long steel tube. The inside of the tube gives you a place for your 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar. Simple and works on all sizes of filter cans. No cutting or crushing of cans. Both good tools.

I had no luck with this type and as a last resort, purchased the chain type that did work, as the OP mentioned.

Yup, the HF locking chain wrench the OP links to will do the trick. If you need more leverage the first time around, a 12" section of 2" sch 40 PVC pipe will fit over the grips and amp up the force. If the canister starts to crush before popping free, reposition the chain. The nearer the thread end the better. Too much concentrated force can cut into the can.

I use PVC sch 40 pipe as an extension for almost anything, including the 3/4" ratchet and breaker bar. I also have various lengths and diameters of metal pipe if needed, but they are heavy in the larger diameters.

I used a different type chain wrench that works with 1/2 drive. I used an extension and breaker bar and I needed every ft/lb of it. It crushed the filter a little but no leak.
