Tractor
Kubota L3410 HST, J Deere riding mower
I used my 3410 HST a week ago to groom some roads and put in in the barn. Had no problems at all. Today, I got it out to do some more work and found that I cannot get it out of the medium range - can't move the lever except to get to neutral and once there it takes some effort to get it back to M. Any ideas ?

Without knowing more about your tractor, such as hours, etc., I suggest taking it back to the selling dealer and have it repaired. Just one more reason to fill out the profile...

Try pushing the clutch and letting the tractor drift a little, or in neutral let the clutch out and then push the HST pedal a little and then push the clutch back in and try again.

Sometimes my B2910 is harder than other times to change ranges, but by by doing the above, it always is possible to shift between ranges without forcing anything.

I would even say don't force anything!. If you force it you may bend the linkage and then all bets are off...

Junkman - I had a complete profile but it all disappeared twice and then at some point I was unable to post at all, so I had to rejoin as beowulf as the site would not let me get in again or use my former site name of monkeybreath and I never got around to reinserting my profile - I also lost my silver member status history - anyway, I will update profile again. Thanks for the reminder. Regarding the problem, I am puzzled as all worked fine the last time I used the tractor (and I was using Low a quite a bit then) and this time just cannot get into high or low range. . . I simple pulled it out of the barn and drove to where I was going to work and when I needed Low I was not able to put it there. I can get to neutral from M, and then back to M (with some difficulty) but no hope to go anywhere else. I did try what Henro suggested first as I was aware that at times you may need to go forward or back a bit when you want to change gears, but that didn't work either. By the way, I just thought of something else, when I put it in neutral, it is in reality still in M as I could move when I hit the pedal . . . If there is no easy answer, it looks like I will be contacting Kubota to come up and see me as I have no trailer. . .

Check the fluid levels to see if the fluid is low. Also check to see if there is any mud that might have caked around the shift levers and are binding the linkage. The old adage, it was running when parked always comes into play. What ever it is, it didn't happen after it was parked, but before. Think back to what you were doing and that might give you a hint as to what might be wrong. Is there a particular sequence of events to shifting, such as taking it out of 4 wheel drive first? I know that I can't remove my truck from 4 WD Low unless I put it into reverse and back up a few feet first. Check the owners manual for something that you might have forgotten. Usually it is some simple operation that is rarely used that causes the glitch. I ran into the same thing with the knob that lowers the 3 pt hitch arms under the seat on my tractor. Forgot about it and was wondering why it wouldn't work. Let us know what you find. This will help someone else down the line.... Thanks for filling out the profile.. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
One other thing..... if you contact the Webmaster, he will fix your old "monkeybreath" account so you can use it again. It isn't that old that you should abandon it, but you are correct, the system will not allow you to register twice with the same name.. Possibly one of the Moderators can even help to resolve the problem. Personally speaking I think that Monkeybreath is a classier name!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Try rocking the tractor back and forth i bit. Use the loader to push it back and forth. The gears just might not be meshing/unmeshing.

Look around the range lever and linkage. Mine has a zerk fitting, and requires periodic lubrication.

Check you fluid levels to make sure they are not low or burnt ect indicating a major problem.

Is it safe to assume that you've already looked at the lower end of that lever to make sure the linkage is still properly hooked up?

Bird, I have looked at it but not sure what I am seeing. I can see that the lever -below the slot - fits into a "U" shaped device when in M - which it obviously needs to do to engage, and that it will not get into the same or another U slot -device which I assume moves it to low or high. From what I can see, and not knowing anything about the mechanical end of this, the lever appears as if it should, when moved from M to N and then to the right, should fit into a different U slot and then be able to move that down I don't think that is working - should get my wife to work the clutch while I look under there. . . hard for me to explain. . .but thanks to all here who have taken the time to help and I will check out all of this.

Sounds like a disconnect.. either in the linkage or in the tranny itself. No matter what.. you shouldn't be able to move in Neutral. Not only do you have an operational problem.. but a safety problem too.

Time to see the repairman.

Beowulf,

My tractor has done that on occasion. I think you will find it is an easy fix. Move your range lever to the Neutral position and take a look at the "U slots" you described. This is the position that the "U slots" should be across from each other so the lever can move over and engage the other "U". Take a pry bar and move the other "U" so it lines up with the Neutral position. Everything will work fine after that.

Make sure to set the parking brake and block the wheels. You will be shifting the range selector to Neutral with the pry bar and don't want the tractor to roll while you are working on it.
