I couldn't agree more.
But, as an example, Ohio State's Football program brought in $115,000,000 in 2019 while spending only $52,000,000, allowing the Athletic Department to be self-funded. Football supports most of it. It uses no tuition or goobermint tax dollars and sends the excess to the University.
