I've always heard that Jack Russells were smart...
He was a mess He could understand what you were talking about and would act accordingly whether he liked it or disliked it.

He would poop in someone's shoes if he disliked them If they smartened up and picked their shoes up. He would poop exactly where that persons feet would land when they got out of bed with 100 percent accuracy and success rate.

Devious was an understatement with that dog.

And protect your twig and berries if you were a stranger and made a move towards my wife or daughter or the grandkids. This also applied if he knew you but didn't like you. So best not to make any sudden moves towards my wife, daughter, or the grandkids unless you were sure.

One of my daughters male friends thought it was funny to tease him. Well Jack went in for the kill and was swinging from the boys crotch. It was a darned good thing that the kid was wearing baggy pants. Kid then went to hit jack when I stepped in and grabbed his hand mid swing. I then removed Jack from his crotch. That boy didn't step foot in the house again.

If I recall, they were originally bred to take care of rats on ships. Despite our opinion of the latter as vermin, they too, are very smart and it takes a smarter foe to catch them.

That makes sense. He was a good varmint remover from the house. Mice and lizards would keep him occupied for hours. You would find the offending varmint in a soggy puddle somewhere on the floor later on.

He was a snake killer as well. I found that out when he dug a copper head out of root ball, swung it around like a pair if nun-chucks and then tossed it at my wife

Ha ha ha, so thoughtful for him to get an escort back into the yard!

Our two dogs, one would jump 6' fence, the other would excavate a hole under it in 5 minutes.

I don't know if it's true or not, but have been told the way to keep them from digging under is to place some of their own scat in the hole.

That would probably work on most, but I had a rescue dog that would eat its own scat. It was from a dog hoarding nut who had them all (42 dogs total) half starved. That was a hard habit to break, ended up having to muzzle it when outside. Good dog other than that and its fear of people, which also was hard to break. Both took a few years. The fear of people I did not work too hard on since it would stay back a few feet and bark like crazy which is part of what I want in a dog, but I did finally get it to let someone besides me touch it.

That actually works. The fool proof for digging under was to bury the fence 6" or more deep.

If I ever do another one on my property, I'll rent a trencher, and trench the line before installing. Then use the blade on the trencher to back fill after

We have a cat that won't meow. He can meow if, for instance, you step on him in the dark. But if you get him a snack, or cat food, he opens his mouth as if to meow, but only a hiss of air comes out. HHHHHHhhh HHHHHhhhhh Weird little dude.

We were down to one donkey and got a companion from our farrier who had a solo donkey amongst a herd of horses.

Well that donkey would open up his mouth and heave but couldn’t make a sound. That was okay as his pasture mate did enough braying for the pair of them.

A couple years went by and one day we were outside and he was silently mouthing a greeting when a loud bray sound got out. Not sure who was more surprised and excited - my wife and I or the donkey. That was the end of his silent days.

I always though the perfect pet would be a cat who would act like a dog. Ride in the truck cab without having to be caged, protective of the homestead, etc.

One day a solid white cat with blue eyes showed up at our house. No idea why. No owner found. Cat was in good shape and tame, friendly.

Penned her up in the building while we tried to find her owners. Turned out she was pregnant. Surmise she was dumped because of that. This appeared to be her first litter. She was a great mother. We took her and the kittens to the farm. She was doing really well in a cage so I decided to try her outside the cage riding in the truck. She was pretty good. She’s getting better. She will jump in the truck every time the door is open if she gets a chance.

Neighbor had a small fiest dog that always barked like crazy and would come over in the yard and bark when we were outside. I got to where I could tune it out but it was aggravating. Sandy Cat did not like the dog. She watched the dog and growled. But just watched him. Finally one day she got a chance to jump that dog and chased him back into his yard howling. I laughed so hard. That dog has learned the yard is no place for him. Sandy would sit on the trailer and look toward the dogs home for an hour or longer at a time just watching for that dog to show it’s face. As soon as he saw that cat raise up he would turn and run.

I called my wife one evening on FaceTime and Sandy heard my voice and meowed until my wife let her talk to me.

She has caught or cornered several snakes including 4 young, small copperheads with green tails.

She is getting better about riding in the truck but I won’t do it alone with her. I have to ride and hold her or my wife will until she get tired and we put her in the cage.

She has slanted eyes that are blue but her kittens had round eyes. One Kitten had a blue eye and a green eye.

She climbs up on my shoulder and sits there for quite awhile and seems to like that better than sitting in my lap.

My border collie growls at me when she want attention or food. Not in a mean way at all. Somehow she doesnt know how to whimper and whine.

Beagle Bailey knows where the squeaky floor spot is in our bedroom and keeps stepping there until we wake up.

My little Boston, Molly, liked to ride in my truck. Whenever I opened the door, she would jump in and I couldn't coax her out, until I took her for a ride around the cul-de-sac...and then she was happy!

I can leave my dogs in the truck for an hour if the sun is not out. They take a nap and later are just as happy to get out, as if I took them somewhere.

We had a rescue golden that was deathly afraid of vehicles... until he figured that he will not be left behind if he got in. Then it became his dog house and he didn't want to leave it...

My dog will stay in the truck for hours. He generally goes with me anyways, although age and old injuries are keeping him out of the woods more and more. Often when I'm home and working outside I will put him in one of the trucks, open the door and leave him there to watch me.

This morning, while outside, Brownie( chocolate Cocker Spaniel) met his first porcupine. I couldn't see what it was but his barking told me it was important. My heart dropped to my knees when I saw it was a porky. This is how I lost my previous puppy. Brownie advanced on the porky. The porky hissed at him. Brownie rapidly retreated and sat down, right at my feet. I was so happy - I almost cried. The porky is "gone" and Brownie got one of his very special treats for being such a good boy. This was the first porky I've seen on the property in over ten years.

There are porcupines out there but normally way out on the property. Eating the bark on the tops of small pines.

My 15 YO red heeler is very hard to spot in the woods this time of year with all the leaves on the ground. Plus she has picked up a habit of stopping where she is at when I call her rather than returning to me. So no movement, red on brown is very hard to spot, particularly if she stops behind a tree or rock. Our woods are thick and it has me thinking she will stay in the truck next time.

Or you could put one of those flaming orange fluorescent dog jackets on the red healer. They are so bright - they will glow, even in the daylight. Maybe she would realize that the jacket makes her visible at any moment.
