Our German shepherd tattles on my wife

The other day though, she got everyone in the house to go for a walk with her.

Gypsy went over to my wife first, and nudged her. She then went to my wife's shoes, and then nudged her leash that hangs by the door.

So my wife got up to put her shoes on and take her out for a walk.

Well gypsy went over to my wife's sister who was stretched out on the couch. Nudged her, and then pointed at her shoes

She made sure they both went walking

You've told stories about him before, sounds like a pretty smart dog. Well, he IS a GSD.
Is he related to the one which raised your grandson and taught him to walk?

Our GSD carries rocks around and leaves them for me to hit with my mower. Just last week he picked up a piece of shale about 6" x 6" x 3" and left it in the driveway for us to run over. I don't know why or how he does it. He found half of a glass 1 gallon jar in the woods and left it in the yard one day. Not sure how he didn't cut the crap out of his mouth on that one.

My current rescue, Pyr and herding dog, has phenominal hearing. We live more than a quarter mile off the paved road and even if we are watching television she can hear a car pull off the paved road onto the dirt road. She immediately goes to the front door to see if they are coming to us.

They all do that. Out here when an unknown to them vehicle turns off the pavement over a mile away they perk up, alert is sounded if the come down the hill about 1/4 mile. Completely ignore known vehicles unless it come in the driveway and does not reside here. Even the UPS, USPS and FedEx vehicles have their own rules per the lead guard dog.

Mom was getting ready for bed, and gypsy went over and sat next to where her cookie jar was. When mom asked her what she wanted, she nosed the jar. When mom inspected the contents of the cookie jar and saw the dental treats, she figured that was her routine and gave her one. After she got her treat, she headed for bed.

Our dog will sit and look at where the treats are kept...

He knows he is supposed to sit before he gets his meals or a treat....

When he comes inside, he gets THREE treats. He knows this, so he will go sit and look at where the treats are kept. He can count, because if he does not get THREE treats, he will just sit there waiting for the correct amount. Sometimes, especially on the weekends, he will just go and sit and stare at the treat "station" until he gets his come inside treats OR his extra special treat.

Sometimes, the little s...t, will ask to go outside. We will let him out and he won't get off the porch. So we we let him back in and he does what? Goes to the treat station, sits and waits for his three treats. He only asks to go out to get his treats....

If it is not too hot outside, I will take the dog grocery shopping. He KNOWS when I am going to the grocery store vs somewhere else based on how I get dressed and the time of day. If the dog knows it is a grocery store trip, he will bounce off the walls until I can let him outside. Sometimes, he knows someone is going some where, but he does not know where, and he will go to the basket that holds his car seat belt harness and leash. He will nose or pick up the harness and leash to let ye know it is time to take him...

We have an attached garage and that's the way I enter and leave the house most of the time. No longer.... The Newfy thinks he's going for a car ride if he leaves the house through the garage. He stops at the back door of my truck and waits.

He also hangs out at the pantry door until he gets a treat, and you better figure out which treat he wants.

He can also count to three, he gets exactly three blueberries from my blueberry and Cherrio breakfast, every morning. If you short change him, he'll poke you with a front leg until he gets his third blueberry.

He's stubborn, if he doesn't want to go out it cannot be forced. He'll come and get hooked up to his leash and either lay down blocking the exit door and refuse to go outside or he'll go out the door and lay down on the deck and refuse to go any further.

His first walk of the day means going out for a roll on the lawn for a good 2 - 3 minutes, then a thorough belly rub before deciding he really needs to pee.

You cannot get away with missing his ball time, he has a 10" horse ball he chases around outside at least three times a day until he gets tired. Sometimes he'll bring it back to me for a throw, other times he runs past me heading to the back door, "I'm done, it's time to get back inside". The horse ball comes first, then treats, then belly rubs. He has his priorities all worked out in his head.

He's a three year old Newfoundland and today marks his 4 week anniversary with us, it's amazing how much training he has done in just a few weeks, (training us.....). We've had a bunch of Newfies and a bunch of rescues but this guy is something else. No behavioral issues, no food aggression, no separation anxiety. Just a laid back, well adjusted knuckle head. We really lucked out.

Happens a lot with the giant breeds. Rare for an 2 year old to act like an grown up, I have one at 18 month and her her sister is just a big puppy at the same age. Jethro (Great Pyr) took over 4 years to act right.... almost gave up on him....

It's a she she didn't teach the grandson how to walk. But she's taught him how to get around my kitchen blockade as well as instigating a few of the times they have gotten in trouble

She's pretty good at conveying what she wants with nudges and pointing.

And for God sakes, don't ignore her when she wants booty scratches. She gets down right demanding

She doesn't like snoring. It disturbs her beauty sleep. She will kick the ever living snot out of you if you snore.

If that doesn't work, she will get up in your face and start crying softly. Her nose about 2 inches from tour nose. That is a warning by the way.

If you dont wake up from that, you will get French kissed by her..... and that is a whole lot of tongue

I would take Gypsy to the pet stores for an outing and socialization. She would sit down next to one of the store employees who had treats.

Give them a paw, get a treat. Lay down and look cute, get another treat.

She would do this until she cleaned the person out of treats and then move on to the next employee

I finally pointed out to the employee that they were in fact the one being trained
