I saw a screech owl at the local nature center, and couldn't believe how small and pretty it was. Told the handler "that pretty little thing makes all that noise?!?".

When I was little there was one in our back yard and I was afraid of it. So mom and dad took me out in the yard and shined a flashlight on it while it screeched. I was still afraid but at least i knew it would not eat me. Ed

When I was a kid I could imitate a screech owl perfectly.... then I got whiskers and had to switch seats in the choir, too.

No, in choir I solo'd the Ave Maria. In the woods, I imitated the screech owl. Now I do a pretty good Bowser from Sha Na Na! :laughing:

I worked on a job in Hersey Pa that the general contractor was Bowser Construction. Not a day went by that I did not hear someone do the Sha Na Na thing! :laughing: Ed

We were night fishing one time, just had a little camp fire for light and we kept hearing something moving around across the river. I kept telling my buddy that I think I saw a big foot over there. He was getting worried and wanted to go home so I told him I was just messing with him. About that time a river otter came down the bank between us and shot into the river. After that it was a fact. He had to go HOME. Ed

I married a german girl I met over there, she was pretty much a city girl. Me? Pretty much country guy. While stationed in Tx we got into fishing for catfish and bass. Hooked up with a buddy to set a trotline on lake in the country - all night project for a fish fry in the morning. We set up camp about 5pm, set oout the trot lines, gathered a couple loads of driftwood for tha camp fire. Things went along fine until it got dark when she wanted a 'good fire' so we built it up a bit. Time for the next trotline run and we were out in the lake, looked back and there was a huge blazxe going. Got back to find she had sstuffed every peice of wood she could lay her hands on in the fire.

I live well in the outskirts, like end of the road.
Often I heard what sounded like a chain saw that was not well tuned, kind of putta put put, ..put.
Always figured some one was cutting firewood or something.
Well the LOL is on me!
It is partridges doing the courtship thing.

My neighbor heard that.... it was me snoring!

My wife thought I had apnea, so they sent me for sleep studies. Nope. I just snore real loud.


For years after we moved in here, I swear I heard and air compressor cycling off and on every 3-4 minutes for 10-15 minutes, then it would stop. Then a few hours later, it would start again. Took me 15 years to realize it was the trains stopped on the tracks a few blocks down. They have air compressors. Big air compressors.

I remember when I was little, back in the early '40's, living in the boonies in N.E. Oklahoma. At night you could hear the old oil well pump jacks with their irregular chug...chug chug........chug...

about the time i was a teenager i got a job starting one of those hit and miss oil well engines. all winter i had to walk up a hill about a half mile long and adjust the gas regulator then crank and crank until it hit and started. it had a timer that i set for how long to run it. will never forget that sound, chug, hiss, hiss, spit, chug
