Has anyone found synthetic oil in straight 30wt? I have a small engine that recommends straight 30w to avoid oil consumption.
Cannot find any 30w synthetic.

Don't know why anyone would ever want a straight weight oil. Those are just old specs because not much was available back then.

ANY oil is heavier at startup than at running temperature. The straight weight applies to running temperature (e.g. 210 F).

Get yourself a good 5w30 synthetic. There are plenty of those around.

RalphVA. My Toro chipper/shreader is 3 yrs old and has a 11.5hp BS. Specifically calls for straight 30 or it will consume oil. Synthetic is more fluid than dino making it easier to pull start.

I had a 12 hp Gravely that I switched to synthetic. It had been using oil. By the 3rd change of Mobil 1, it actually quit using oil. I used the 20w50 Mobil 1 in it.

I went to synthetic oil in the power steering reservoir of our 1996 Tacoma. The rubber line attached to a metal one at one point in the system blew off, because the oil was so slick. I had to put a clamp on the rubber line.

Don't know why synthetic is so much slicker. It's the same oil as dino oil, but with a lot less (almost no) additive.

The word Synthetic is confusing; it describes a process, not a material. For example, white sand is synthesized into glass, but glass is never called "synthetic sand".

In the late 90's an oil company had a Group III product that they called synthetic. Prior to that, only Group IV was called synthetic. The oil company won the BBB arbitration and after that the word synthetic has been "bastardized". It's come to mean lots of different things. So, it's "buyer beware" when it comes to synthetics. Unfortunate for everyone.

This maybe what you are looking for, its comes in qts

Thanks everyone. I will find it now that I know it exist. Asking the auto stores or dealers did nothing to identify a source. TBN is great.

Thanks again.

Small air cooled engines usually run at high operating temperature and that causes rapid oxidation of the oil. With petroleum oils, this is controlled by frequent oil changes. AMSOIL offers a special small engine lubricant that is formulated without viscosity improver and is capable of long term operation at temperatures all the way to 350 degrees F. It is not necessary to change the oil every 10 hours – AMSOIL Small Engine Oil can go 3 to 4 times the recommendation.
