MF 1130
Greetings Gents:

I've got a MF 1130 that I'm having some blow-by woes with. It is not feasible for me to have it overhauled right now (big bucks that I don't have), but I'm losing a good bit of oil. What are my options for decreasing oil consumption? I was thinking of an additive maybe, or using a heavier weight oil. Right now, I use Rotella SAE 30. Could moving up to SAE 40 help? I can't find Rotella in SAE 40, so would any of you have any suggestions as to another brand? Also, if there is any substance out there that could reduce oil consumption, what would it be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have used heavier weight oil and it has worked on some engines. For some reason it doesn't seem to work on others. At this point use any diesel rated oil that is 40w and you should be fine. I wouldn't say that if the engine didn't need attention.

Just keep pumping oil into it. It ain't pretty but they'll ususally keep running.

Thanks for the input guys. An old uncle of mine suggested to me that I should just keep on pumping the oil in her and she'll be fine, but I'm tired of finishing the job looking like a dalmation.

BC there is a add on device that's used on boats with diesel engines. Maybe gas too. But this unit will take the blow by pressure and seperate the oil from the water and drain the oil back in the engine. It's used on inboards engines and keeps the fumes from building up and also keeps oil droplets from getting in the engine compartment. I've never used or seen one but have read about it. Go to Walker Engineering - Home and take a look.

May be still more money than you would like to put in. Engines can sometimes last a long time with blowby. Keeping check on the oil level with blowby is the key. With the airsep that oil goes back in the pan. Just something to think about. May be to $$$.

I'd 2nd that on looking for a diesel rated 40w. if it were a gasser.. I'd say look for a 20w50.

Years ago when I couldn't afford a good car nor an engine rebuild I bought a product called CD-2 at the auto parts store and added it to the oil. It slowed down blowby greatly. In my case from a quart a day to less than a quart a week. Of course that was in a gas engine. CD-2 is still available and probably safe for diesel but read the uses on the can before buying it. It pours out like honey. I tried STP but that didn't slow down the blowby in my case.

I had a blowby problem too. One thing that I learned was to remove each injector one at a time and see which cylinder is the problem. For me, it was two out of six cylinders and I had to rebuild, but if it's just one cylinder, you might be able to disconect the fuel line to it. If it's not getting fuel, than maybe the rings can keep the oil out of the combustion chamber and you will have less blowby.

I head of a guy doing something like this by putting a BB in the injector. The guy I was talking to bought the tractor thinking it ran fine, but later on her realized that the BB had been put in to kill the cylinder. This stoped any blowby and knocking.

Just realize that the longer you run it in this condition , the worse the damage to the engine will be. It might be too expensive to repait now, but in a few years, it's only goning to be worse and ALLOT more expensive.

Good luck,
Eddie

Hi Cajun,

Like was mentioned:

1. Higher viscosity oil will likely help... a treatment like Lucas to raise viscosity/coat parts might even more.

2. Start planning for the overhaul sooner or a new motor later--#1 is a patch job, & added oil will still be working it's way through until you're out of "viscosity jumps";)

Sorry to hear it...

So how much do you guys think it would cost to have the engine overhauled? I found the overhaul kits for around $600 to $1,000 but I know it will be labor that will hit hard.
