I need to know what type of stone material would work best for a stone driveway around 250' x 12'.

As is common in Florida my soil is very sandy and I am looking for some type of stone material that would be suitable over the sandy soil.

Also, what the best way to prepare the sandy soil before putting the stone down?

Thanks.

To compact sand and crushed gravel you need a vibratory packer. Small self propelled roller ones that fit the back of a P/U can be rented should work.

Whatever stone you use make sure it is crushed so it can be packed.

I would mix the stone into the sandy soil to a depth of 8" or so. Then smooth and roll out. The driveway will be much better if you mix the stone with the sand than just try to put stone on top. The sand underneath will still be able to shift. You can put a coating of stone on top after you have a good base, but the drive will only be as good as the base it.... Besides, it will give you more seat time.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
