CPSC, Stihl Inc. Announce Recall of Chain Saws

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Stihl Inc., of Virginia Beach, Va., is voluntarily recalling about 3,000 chain saws. Fuel can leak out of the chain saw's tank, which could cause a fire or injury hazard to consumers.

Stihl has received six reports of fuel leakage. No fires or injuries have been reported.

The recalled Stihl chain saws include model number MS 170 and MS 180 C with serial numbers 255120848 through 255122797 and 255739074 through 255741150. The name "Stihl" and the model numbers are located on the starter housing. The serial number is printed on the housing near the bumper spikes. These chain saws were manufactured in Virginia Beach, Va.

Stihl dealers nationwide sold the chain saws from July 2002 through October 2002 for between $180 and $200.

Consumers should stop using the chain saws immediately and
return them to the dealer where purchased for a free repair. For more information, consumers can contact Stihl at (800) 610-6677 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or log on to the company's website at www.stihlusa.com.

I've a 180C, that my wife likes to use for trimming tree limbs because it's light, easy to start, and the anti-vibration system is excellent (yet I've used it on hardwoods up to 12"). Anyhow, it was purchased about 3 months ago and I've noticed that when it sits (running) for awhile, there's much more smoke than expected when you first start cutting with it again. Serial numbers don't match the recall - but I'm still taking it in for a check. Thanks.

That is inherent in 2 cycle to do that. The oil mixture is constant be it at idle or full throttle and yet, at idle, the oil mixture is actually much richer then it needs to be. Newer 2 cycles use oil injection which allows for variable oil amounts added with the gas just prior to combustion for a more accurate mixture of oil and gas based on need which is determined by RPM. This is not the gas with small 2 cycles like saws, weed whackers etc., as it would add significantly to the weight. Your best bet is to be sure your mix is accurate, many folks over do it on the oil feeling it to be better safe then sorry. Get a higher quality 2 stroke oil, even try a synthetic which can be added in smaller amounts. The other thing is to avoid excessive idling. The result will be a plug that gets fouled and a exhaust system that gets inundated with oil build up. The really fancy 2 cycle machines actually go a step further and use fuel injection. Polaris is doing it with their personel water craft I understand. The life of the 2 cycle will be coming to an end sometime in the near future. The pressure to get the combustion engine cleaned up are getting to great. Rat...
