Your just not used to bigger saws.

Thats only 79cc and runs alot like my 7900 did 20 years ago. Also 79cc.

To me these are medium sized cc saws. 70cc-80cc

Then you got the 80cc range and then 90cc range and then the over 100cc range.

Dont grab a 661 or 881.

Oh, I don’t think its a big CC saw, either. I just think it’s got a lot of power to weight ratio.
I did have a big CC Sachs Dolmar with a 32” bar just like in your photo, but I bet it only got used 1-2 times a year. Not a lot of 5’ diameter trees round here.

Thats not a big sachs per say. That is 2000's later model Dolmar. 79cc
Sachs name got dropped long before the 7900.

Sachs was dropped back around 91.

Friend of mine did a video comparing.

The cool thing was you could buy 2 7900 for the cost of 1 500i.

This was mine. I had 2, but I can’t remember if this was the bigger or smaller one.
Had one with a 24” and one with a 32”. I think this was the smaller 6401 tho. Picture was from 5 years ago.
When you saw a lot of logs like I do, they all kinda run together.

Anyway, I love my 500i I don’t give a chit about video comparisons

I seriously considered a 500i but one of the big timber cutters I follow a lot who uses mostly Husky saws decided he wanted to try out the 500i and bought a new one. He made lots of videos of him cutting with the 592 and the 500i and he had lots of issues with his 500i, and ultimately said he regretted ever buying it. Now to be fair, perhaps he got a lemon of a saw. I use to love my Stihl saws, but mostly the older ones as I am not much of a fan of today's offerings. I do like my 261CM but there are a couple other 50cc saws I like better than the 261. I am definitely not brand loyal with anything and typically buy what I consider to be the best offering in whatever I do buy.

I see a lot of 661 & 881 used for sale. Tempting, but not enough big wood to justify. Seems like a lot of guys buy them and don’t get the use.

That guy does I know him.

He just like proving things and owns most of the older and newer saws made.

He isnt color blinded either so no bias by him. Tells it like it is.


Saw in your pic is just the 64cc open port saw.
They used to rent those at home depot. Then sell off cheap too.

Bigger is better, but only to a point. I actually had an 084 or 088 (125 - 135cc) for awhile, and because all my work is felling and bucking rather than horizontal milling, I found the 064 (85cc) far preferrable. Those big saws can chew through anything, but at least in stock configuration, some of them are mighty slow turners.

If you re-sprocket an 084/088 for better chain speed, then it could be a real monster, with a long bar. But a 28" bar being enough to get through logs up to 50" diameter with relative ease, that I've never found it worth maintaining another saw just for those odd occasions. The 85cc saw will pull a 36" bar when needed, especially since I run skip chain on mine.

The 500i may not be a "big saw", but I think it really hits the sweet spot for anyone who's felling and bucking big east-coast hardwoods. Save those 130cc monsters for milling, where you don't need to lug the thing around with you!

Shoot grab the saw for the cutting at hand I say. Lighter the better.

This little guy I use for 12" under and filled up as used with bar and chain is 7lb range.

It even makes my as used 14lb range 50cc saws fill heavy after cutting all day. Bar and chain selection changes weights.
