Stihl Saws, Leak More Bar Oil Than They Use

/ Stihl Saws, Leak More Bar Oil Than They Use #31
My Poulan (stop laughing, I only use it a few tiems a year) leaks so bad that the sharpening files, the extra 50/1 oil, the goggles, the leather gloves, and anything else in the case is totally saturated in oil and there is still a puddle on the bottom of the case. I keep it in the case so that the puddle does not end up on the floor where it will soak into the concrete. I haven't tried loosening the cap to remove the vacuum, or laying it on its side, but I will now.

I haven't owned a saw yet that didn't leak as it got older. Just get a couple of oil spill pads, and store your saw on them. To the Poulin owner; (and everybody laughing at you ;) ) at one time my father owned a Johnsereds, a big Stihl, a Husky... and a McCulloch Mini-Mac. The former three saws were nearly new, but the little mini-,Mac was what he carried in his ton truck, and what he grabbed for occasional use.

I was surprised that the fine quality "Chicago Electric" saw that I recently bought for the wife to use inside for small wood-furnace-feed touch ups did NOT leak any!

Two Stihl saws and neither leak, my Stihl combo pole saw leaks constantly until empty.....

I have three Sthil products, a chainsaw, Kombi, and a weed eater. The chainsaw and Kombi both leak, the weed eater never does. And it is the oldest of the three.

I have two Stihls MS192 & MS280. Neither leak BUT the accumulated oil on the chain and in the bar groove does eventually drip on the floor - maybe 6-8 drops. A ways back TomSeller mentioned something - maybe the cap on the oil reservoir is leaking. This might explain why "on their side" they don't leak. I know on both my Stihls the gas & oil caps are kind of a funky arrangement. I have filled them with gas - turned them back upright and had all the gas drain out because I didn't get the cap on just right.

Yes, I have fixed some leakers with a simple replacement cap or replacement O ring. If it does not leak with the cap up, the cap is often the source of your leak. Not a flippy cap fan, but I am a Stihl fan and live with the flippy caps. The flippy part is fine, but why it can't be a simple thread design, I will never know.
