Both Echo and Stihl are both great saws. I debated between the ECHO CS-500P & the Stihl MS-290. I bought the Stihl. Probably could not have gone wrong on either saw.
Still saws are made in America and Germany. Don't know of any models made in Japan. Maybe some of the new homeowner saws, I have no idea.
That 290 is a great all around saw from the last emissions era. It'll run great and be easy to maintain for many years to come. It's not a pro saw, but it's a very well reputed model. It's great that your grandpa left it to you.
Got a lot of miles on my MS 290 Farm Boss. Just came in from sawing some dead branches in the cedar hedge row for 5-6 hours. Between running the saw and running the chipper/shredder, I'm tucker out and hungry. But that Stihl never fails me...i.e. after I got it tuned just right.
skytime....taking a carburetor apart, cleaning it and reassemble....and "Voila" it runs. Nice going.
