I was just wondering if Sthil dealers "deal" or is it everyone pays retail price. I want to get a new saw this weekend but did not know how much room on $$ I would have. Can you get them to throw stuff in (extra chain, etc)? Also what do you feel is a good homeowner model - I have 8 acres, will cut maybe 3-4 cords of wood a year and a trail for the atv. I have access to a LARGE Echo saw for the BIG jobs but want something smaller for the "normal" work.
Thanks

I don't know about the dealers in your area, but I've bought two Stihl string trimmers; one each from dealers 80 miles apart in Texas and my brother bought a Stihl chainsaw from yet another Stihl dealer. We had no luck getting them to come down on their original price, but they did throw in a 6 pack of 2-cycle oil and a gas can.

I haven't seen them deal much. I see the other thread on chainsaws is large and did not feel like spending the energy to go through it. My .02 says the Stihl trim saws/arbor saws are hands down the best and the price is indicative of that. For larger models, the Husqvarna and Stihl are still my favorite. I have a Echo trim saw you can have, runs great but won't hold a chain regardless of chain tension, chain or bar. Consequently it has been slapped around a bit. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Ever operate a Jonsered? They're definitely in the same class!

No deals on the price in SE WI but there is a difference in the extras that get thrown in or reduced price packages of accessories if purchased at the same time as the saw.

Probably something like the MS290 Farm Boss would be a good all around saw.

My two stihl dealers stick to list price. I do occasionally get discount coupons from Stihl and used these on a backpack blower purchase.
You can ask for an extra chain, case, baroil or hat. Worst they can say is no.

I have a Stihl 025C (now the 250C). It is considered a consumer saw. We cut 4 to 6 cords a year and it has been flawless. We use a 16 inch bar.

It has a tool less chain adjuster that I really like. At the dealers I thought it was just a gimmick. But in the field it is very handy. I sharpen the chain with each tank of gas so the tool less feature is used a lot. The only thing I use the "scrench" for is to remove the oil and gas fill caps. On the new Stihl consumer saws the caps have a flip up lever so removing them no longer requires the scrench.

Good luck in whatever you get. While at the dealers look at the safety chaps an helmet too! Maybe the dealer will "deal" if you buy a saw, chaps and a helmet system all at once.

I have the MS 270 "Wood Boss" it is a little lighter than the 290 "Farm Boss" I cut 4 cords a year & it is flawless.

I got the dealer to knock a few bucks off the case when I bought the saw, other than that it was MSRP.

Husky's are available on the internet at discounted prices. I would have bought one probably saving 10% vs the Stihl, but the local dealer didn't impress me (service etc.)

I have bought 3 Stihl products in the last year, Chain saw(MS 290), Backpack blower(BR400?), and a String trimmer. All the dealers within a 25 mile radius from me were the same price. I think Stihl "fixes" the price on it's stuff.

But Good dealers will throw in some extra's like blades, chains, oil, or cases to thier regular customer's.

I bought a Stihl MS290 "Farm Boss" right after Hurricane Katrina and have been very satisfied with it. It has handled all of the trees and limbs I have had to cut up with it. It's a little heavier than the Poulan I had, but not so heavy that it's hard to use.
Oh yeah, no discount off MSRP. I was just happy to find one available to buy /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.
