I’ve had the muffler on my MS250 apart, there isn’t much to it. On my MS261 I haven’t had it apart.

Okay, I'm tempted to try a straight shot for my 036, as being more used the the 064, I always feel like the 036 is lacking.

That said, the model for the 064 is so cheap that I might just pick up both. The 064 is already a monster saw, massive HP to weight ratio, and it just screams for a relatively big (85cc) saw.

I can't imagine it will make any difference with the 28" bar I usually run on the 064, it really doesn't bog at all. But occasionally I install my 36" bar on that saw for real big cuts, and it may help, there.

I'm ordering both!

Please note the difference in this model of muffler from the one for the later (newer) Stihl 064. Please review pictures closely and compare to your saw to ensure that you are ordering the correct muffler.

If you’re a new saw owner, and have zero experience using one, maybe try renting a smaller cc one to get the hang of it. Also don’t forget to budget for decent safety gear. A sharp saw will go through jeans even at idle.

When I first got mine thought I was doing the right thing by wearing safety glasses.. but they fog. Not ideal at all. I got one of those saw helmets that has the face screen and it was a game changer. They also have built in sound protection and don’t break the bank price wise. Also steel toe boots and I’d say get some chaps and gloves as well.

As far as brands go you already can see a variety of opinions. Be honest with what you need it for. Sometimes the answer is multiple saws. I still have a 20+ year old Stihl Farmboss MS290 which is a mid grade saw. I’ve cut some really big stuff with it and felled a lot of trees with it. Used the heck out of it. Only thing I’ve had to do is replace the fuel line once. I also have a smaller home owner one I think ms170 that I ditched the 16” bar for a 12” one. Make a nice light pruning saw. This past year I also bought EGO battery saw and it’s great for when you’re not doing constant cutting and don’t want to have to start it every 10 minutes. Just instant power up and down.

I may have missed it earlier, but what is your intended usage for this saw? How often will it be used? How much wood are you planning on cutting? What kind of wood will you be cutting?
I think these factors will play a larger role in your decision than brand maybe? And as someone who has never owned a battery saw but am looking into one to add to my lineup, they may be a good option.

I ordered them for both the 036 and 064 yesterday. I'll surely install the one for the 036 immediately, at only 63cc, that saw needs all the help it can get. I may hold off on the 064, until I see how much I like this muffler on the 036, particularly the increased noise. The 064 already sounds more like a motorcycle than a chainsaw, with the factory muffler.

What was a surprise to me, given my 064 is badged "Made in West Germany", is that it's a "later/newer model", according to EPS. Heck, the "the wall" came down in 1989, and West Germany ceased to exist on that date, meaning my saw must have been built 1989 or earlier if the badging is accurate. So, how old are the "older model" saws?!?

In all honesty, I think my saw probably is newer than 1989, and that Stihl continued using the "West Germany" badging well past German re-unification. There remained a perception, many years past the demise of the USSR, that products form the east were inferior to products from the west. Stihl may have continued playing on this 15 years past the collapse of the wall.

I thought the 036 62cc ran fine with a muffler mod. 1st pic

064 ran fine too. Thought it was the better puller torque between my 385 and 505 with 24" 28" buried hardwoods.

I own a mitfull of saws: couple of Stihls, 2 Huskvarnas, Kobalt, even 2 Remingtons from the early 70's My 24V battery power Kobalt is the only one being used now these days. I have the pole version, too. Same usage...It's the light-weight advantage.

064 ran fine too. Thought it was the better puller torque between my 385 and 505 with 24" 28" buried hardwoods.

Had to go to Google to figure out what the heck a 505 was!

I know the Stihl models well, and Husqvarna is easy to figure out. But Poulan is a brand I've never even followed.

83cc Poulan made at Husqvarna plant but Partner design. I did the lime green one for fun to be different.

under $500 will buy you a new Echo 590 which is the best $ spent for a 60cc saw. 4910 best under 500 for 50cc saw.

I have heard good things about the 400 but have no knowledge of it. The 372 can be had for under $1K and I loved mine but a buddy loved it more.

That definitely was the case, a few years ago, but it seems prices are way up today. Clean and fully-operable MS-362's have been selling at $550 - $850 on ebay. Anything at or below $500 is a parts saw or project.

I bought my 036 AV with hard case and bar for $350 about ten years ago. It was used only twice, but by an idiot who bought it to cut down precisely one tree, and then subsequently used it as a stump grinder. The bar was trash, but the saw was otherwise clean, and at least he never straight-gassed it. I already had a nice 20" Still Rollomatic bar and a dozen 20" loops of RS3 chain, so it was a pretty good buy for me.

I think I paid about $550 for my 064 AV about a dozen years ago, with a new 28" Tsumura Total sprocket tip bar and two loops of new Carlton RS3-equivalent full-chisel chain. That saw lands between the 500i and MS-661, in terms of displacement, power, and weight, either of which now run over $1000 used, in good running condition with a new bar and chain.

So it seems prices are nearly double today, what they were 10-12 years ago.

I just picked up a MS461 from FB Marketplace (was more than $500). There were plenty of smaller saws for $500 or less. See them pop up on Craiglist too. This is in the Sacramento, Ca area.

What I noticed was people not getting back to me. Had messages out to three different sellers over the last almost 4 weeks. Those saws are still listed for sale...

The guy I eventually did buy from answered my message in less than 5 minutes. I bought the saw a couple hours later.

I have noticed similar. $500 seems to be close to what you need to spend for a quality, albeit older saw.

Because if the saw was any good at $500, it was so gone so fast it left a dust cloud. Then the seller was too lazy to go back and take down the listing.

I'm sure you can get smaller homeowner saws in good condition for way less than $500, but I'm not even looking at those. When Hay Dude said "good saw", I assumed that means 60cc+ pro saws, only.

I “stole” a Stihl HT131 pole saw for $250 last year. Thing was barely used and runs perfect. I’ve used the heck out of it and made my money back at least 10 times over and it’s still in great shape. I think they’re about $900 new. The guy used it to trim trees in his 1/2 acre yard. Looks like he used it 5 times?

There are deals out there on FBM. You just have to check in early before the sun comes up for them
