I agree with others that the idle wasn't properly set. At idle, the clutch weights should not even be getting thrown out against the drum, so whether the brake is on or off shouldn't matter at all. If the clutch burnt out at idle, then the idle was way too high.

A good visual test to use *every time* you run a saw is to make sure the chain does not move when the saw idles. If it does, that is a red flag that the carb needs tuning or the idle needs adjustment. It's also a big safety issue.
