I have some of those carbon electrodes for gouging with a stick welder and wondered if I could turn the amperage down and maybe sharpen the carbon rod and use it with flux coated bronze rods to braze some non structural steel together. Seems like it should work. Sort of a gas-less poor man's tig braze solution. I've searched for this idea but haven't found anything like it.

Is this a bad idea?

Give it a try and report back. I’ve see folks burn in additional arc rod in rare cases- it does work. I’m guessing the carbon rod will add to and possibly contaminate the weld- but who knows how bad.

I've used a twin carbon torch years back to braze parts.

Didn't use it often, but I had the welder and no gas.
