Steyr 768 Restoration

Gooday Gents & Ladies,

Just got gifted an old 70-80's Steyr without engine or any other parts forward of the gearbox really.

Its been sadly neglected outside to the mercy of the elements so rust has set in a bit and the gearbox has locked up a bit.

I also have an agricultural Perkins from a Massey Ferguson 290.
Im thinking of using that to repower the Steyr and maybe add an engine driven hydraulic pump for the Steyrs systems.

Is it possible to get an adapter fabbed up for that engine?
Or would i be better off finding another engine instead.

Im not a pro mechanic
But know my way around diesels & tractors.
Ive heard about SAE engine housings, read up on it but still cant wrap me head around it

What type of engine did it have from the factory?

Have you checked if the flange is a SAE/ISO std so you can find a bolt on engine?

It was the original diesel Steyr 4cyl non turbo engine.

How would i go about checking, please?

We had a few imported into South Africa in the 80's
They're reliable machines
