Some guy has two of these for sale inthe local paper...What the heck is it? Claims they are 525 HP ??

One of the most amazing feats of power I have ever witnessed was watching a Steiger tractor pull a 24 bottom plow at the farm show when I was a teenager. Just absolutely awesome.

The ST470 Steiger is a BIG tractor. Steiger used the huge KTA-1150 Cummins engine for this machine. That engine in the ST470 was only rated at 470 horsepower...I say only because that engine was sold in other applications at 600-hp. The seller says the tractor is 525-hp and the engines may have been upgraded to the 525-hp at an overhaul. 525-hp was a very common rating for the Cummins KTA.

Actually Versatile was the first to hit the market with Lego build style tractors. JD tried it with the Wagner tractors but failed. Later they tried it again with the 7020 series, based on the 5000 (??) series wheeled tractors to use common engines and rear ends, which had more succes in the market.

They built their first "component built" tractor in 1957. IH introduced their first attemt at big 4wd power in 1961. It was a re-hash of components from their large 4wd construction equipment for the most part.
