Hi, Im having some steering problems.. for some reason the upper and lower bearings keep going out. I ordered new bearings and put them in had the bottom pressed. I have checked for burrs on the shaft and none was found. once the new bearings were in, it immediately began to make a growling noise. in just a little while the steering was out and when I took it back apart, the bearings were just in tiny broken pieces. I have just re-ordered new ones yet again.... and I hope for the same thing not to happen.
any advise you have to offer as to a better way of doing this or what I may have done wrong? could something else be causing this? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif BTW, This is a YM1700 thanks, Dave

Several things come to mind...Is the assembly clean, does it move freely, but with no slop when assembled, (properly shimmed and adjusted), correct lubrication? You can't just slap it together and expect it to work.

Check for a bent shaft, could be putting stress on the bearings........

My 240 did this but all of the gear oil had leaked out of it. I ended up adding a grease fitting and pumping it full with only a small amount of actual oil. This has been working for 2 years now.

Put the ball/nut assembly in the housing without the sector shaft. When it is completely tight the shaft should turn freely. My guess is that it is too tight & destroying the bearings.
