I picked up a heavy duty steel storage cabinet at an auction. Welded on some casters and tore out the pegboard back plate inside to discover a bunch of supports. Does anybody know what they support? They are on the back wall and the inside of the doors. I imagine they are for some type of bins but curious before I start fabbing up some shelves in case there is something I can buy 'off the shelf'.

Thanks Bruce. Since the cabinet is two feet deep I'm hoping there are some modular shelves to maximize usage of space that are sturdy enough for chemicals and paint storage.

Some of the cabinets also use those supports for sheet metal shelves, pretty simple shallow box with the open end down. Not all of the stock shelves would hold up to a lot of paint cans, I suspect.

U-Line may have something that might fit, but you'd probably be paying full retail. Still, that beats not being able to use the cabinet. Steel Storage Cabinets, Industrial Storage Cabinets in Stock - ULINE and scroll down to where it says "extra shelves".

If you don't need/care about metal shelves, you could always trim a piece of plywood to fit, screw a piece of sheet metal on 3 sides here and there to catch the lip, or screw angle on the bottom so one leg points down. Maybe a half dozen washers. If you cut a shallow notch for the washer in the edge you might even get most of the wood resting on the lip.

With the bin slats on the doors, I suspect it is made to have the deep bins in the back, and smaller bins on the doors...that could be a very nice system for parts bins.

Thank you GL... maybe the 48x18s and lots of bins on the doors. Hope the shelves will fit length wise! Better make inside measurement and call to confirm exact dimensions.

Decided to go with cabinet grade 3/4" plywood that I had laying around. Shelves rest on the back wall supports and 1in angle that also had. Bolted to existing rails so the shelves are adjustable in 4" increments.

Now I will be on the hunt for some bins to hang on the doors.
