i would go to a scrap yard or junk yard in your area frirst you mite find some thing you want for less then at last you most have steel yard around you that sell steel rod etc. they usely sell I- beams.

You might also check welding shops. Sometimes they will have something left over from a job and will sell it resonable.

If you know anybody working on a construction site, steel erection jobs ofter have miscellaneous pieces of steel leftover.

Look in your yellow pages under Steel Fabrication, or Steel, or Steel Supplier.
Some local Design Engineers (Structural/Mechanical) will also tell you who they like to use.
I agree you should look into a used or leftover beam first.
Fabircated steel is not 'cheap'.

Find a company around that builds bridges. They usually have a bunch of left over used still.
