Buying Advice Starting to look for a tractor

If buying a tractor, I think you would be better served by a UT, 60HP or more, in the 6K lb range. It will tackle your larger projects but still be nimble enough to do light chores.

I'm anxious to track your progress on this adventure!!!! Keep us posted with pics of course!!! :)

Best thing for large rocks is a backhoe from my experience. Maybe you could buy a construction type tractor/loader/backhoe and sell it when you're done for about what you paid.

That's some good advice. The plan is to retire up there and build a small house. I believe the backhoe would more than pay for itself even if I had to sell it for a loss. Digging foundation for builder or letting him use my backhoe. Trench from barn to house to extend the solar power. Put in a driveway that won't rattle our teeth out. Dig fence hole posts. Water diversion trenches. Bury the propane tank (and create fill dirt), etc. etc. Sell it when I am done and buy a nice CUT or UT.

Something like this would probably be the ticket. Surplus 25 Cat 42D IT 4x4 Backhoe Loader in Albany, Georgia, United States (GovPlanet Item #682464)

For now I am going to put the brakes on buying anything. Retirement is 10-12 years away.

Thanks for all the great advice and preventing me from wasting my money on a small CUT.
