Sheba, welcome to the forum, You will need a good mechanic to check your problem for you, if we knew more about your machine that would help also. There is nothing in your profile as to what you have or year etc.?

The Jinma 200 series has a starter that is notoriously unreliable in cold weather. I presume this is a problem that you didn't have until the nights started cooling down (?). Assuming that's all it is, try heat. I stuck a 200 watt magnetic oil pan heater on the starter housing. Once the starter was fooled into believing it was summer again, the stater engaged every time.

If that doesn't do it, then maybe you're right about one of the components. If I had to choose one, I'd say solenoid - and yes, they're available separately from some Jinma parts suppliers now.

Sheba104,

So you have a Jinma 224 cool.

Please describe exactly what happens (sounds) when you turn the key.

Does it just click?, spin / whirr ?, grind? or do nothing?

Come see us here click here

A little more info on what it is doing or not doing will get you a little more feed back.

Don't know how old your tractor is? Some of the older starters were not lubed very well when they went together a the factory, Ground connections can effect starter operation. The newer starters seem to be better. You could or can purchase a new starter assy or just parts for the one you got. You may just need to take it apart to clean and lube.

Finding the problem will help insure dependable starting ... winter or summer.

A "click" noise when trying to start the tractor may just be a bad battery or a bad ground. Turn on the headlights then have someone watch the headlights while you try to start the tractor. If the headlights dim, you either have a bad battery or a poor ground. If the headlights stay bright, you may have either a bad solenoid or a starter with a "flat spot" or a bad ground. To check the starter for a bad spot or poor ground try to use a jumper directly from the battery to the starter positive connection, with the tractor in neutral. If the tractor cranks you have a bad solenoid. If not, make sure that the starter has a good ground. If there is paint between the starter and the block, the paint can act as an insulator and cause erratic starter function.

The best thing you can do is take the starter to an alternator/starter shop that you can trust. I own a dealership in louisiana and see starter problems all of the time. I took 6 bad starters to a friend that has an alternator/starter shop hoping to salvage one or two. When I went to pick them up he had everyone of the working better than new without replacing one single part. He said that machining and set-up was horrible. We also found an alternator with a built in regulator that sells for the same price. If you need any help feel free to email me at action-equip@charter.net
